Man accused of killing 2 sex offenders

A Washington state man suspected of killing two convicted sex offenders told police officers Sunday that he had intended to kill a third sex offender, according to court records obtained by msnbc.com.
On Saturday, Patrick Boyd Drum of Sequim, Wash., allegedly fatally shot his new roommate, Gary Lee Blanton Jr., 28, before driving to the home of Jerry Wayne Ray.
Around that time, police received a call from man who said, “Help, 911, I’m being shot,” according to court records. Dispatchers were unable to locate the source of call.
The next morning, Ray was found unresponsive at his home. Deputies found an abandoned rental car issued to Drum, 33, with an empty box of 9mm bullets and a note apologizing for the disturbances, according to the court records.
They later found Blanton, 55, also dead. His wife told police that Blanton had told her he was going camping with Drum.
By the end of the day Sunday, police found Drum, who agreed to a recorded interview with a sheriff’s detective, according to the court records. He told the detective that he shot Ray and Blanton several times “because they were sex offenders," the records quoted him as saying. He told the detective that he had intended to drive to another county and kill a third sex offender, according to the records.
It was unclear how Drum knew the men were sex offenders.
Blanton, 28, was convicted in 2001, when he was a teenager, of third-degree rape, according to the National Sex Offender Registry. Ray was convicted in 2002 of first-degree rape of a child.
Karen Unger, Drum's appointed lawyer, was not available for comment on Tuesday.

I have to say that as much as I hate sex offenders, I can never be ok with vigilantism. On the flip side, I think the justice system is forcing people's hands on this. I agree with El....sex offenders, especially those that prey on children should not get a second chance. Not sure what the sentencing is like in the US, but here is amounts to a slap on the wrist. So the justice system keeps putting women and children (especially children) at risk, over and over again, and how much science is there to prove these guys can NOT be rehabilitated.
That being said, you should not be labeled a sex offender for things like statutory rape if you were just a teen yourself. I think they do need to redefine that constitutes a sex offender, then they need to bring down the hammer on these guys (and women). No wonder folks are starting to take the law into their own hands. As much as I am against vigilantism, if some sicko got ahold of my child I cannot say I wouldn't be out for blood.

Unless there are 2 people named Blanton, I'd have to question the article, because they have him listed once as 55 yrs old and twice as 28...... I guess we go with the majority and figure he's 28?...... but if the author got that wrong, what else might s/he have gotten wrong?

Our legal system is in need of a SERIOUS revamp, when it comes to sex-offenders.
Any convicted rapist should get an automatic life sentence.
There is NO justification for the rape of another human being, no matter what the circumstances.
Unlike abortion, this is a cut & dry issue. You raped someone, or you didn't. If you did, FU you, and throw away the key.
Sex-offenders registry list? Yeah... THAT'S going to help the victim(s).
