Men set to live as long as women, figures show

The gap between male and female life expectancy is closing and men could catch up by 2030, according to an adviser for the Office for National Statistics.

Prof Les Mayhew said the difference between the sexes peaked at nearly six years in the 1970s.

Life expectancy is going up all round, but the rates for men are increasing faster.

Plummeting smoking rates in men are thought to explain a lot of the change.

Prof Mayhew, a professor of statistics at Cass Business School, analysed life expectancy data in England and Wales. He was working out how long 30-year-olds could expect to live.

Heart disease
His findings show men languishing far behind for decades, but now starting to get closer to women. If current trends continue, Prof Mayhew predicts, both sexes could, on average, be living to the age of 87 in 2030.

He said: "What's interesting at the moment is that in the last 20 years or so, male life expectancy at 30 has jumped by about six years and if it jumps by the same amount in the next 20 years it will converge with female life expectancy."

The reason could be down to men living a healthier lifestyle. "One of the main reasons, I think, is the trend in the prevalence of smoking. Smoking took off after 1920 in the male population and at its high about 80% of males smoked.

"This was reflected in more divergence in the life expectancy, so by the time you get to about 1970 it was at its peak - the difference in life expectancy was about 5.7 years."

Other factors are thought to be safer, more office-based, jobs. Millions of men used to work in hazardous occupations such as coal mining. Healthcare has meant more men live longer as well. People with heart disease, which is more common in men, can expect to live much longer than they did a few decades ago.

By contrast, women started smoking later than men. Rates of lung cancer are still increasing in women, but are falling fast in men.

A boy and a girl born on the same day will still not have the same life expectancies, as the study looked only at people who had already reached 30. Boys are more likely to die in their first year of life and are more likely to take up dangerous sports or be involved in fatal accidents.

It means that women could still have the edge for some time to come.

Global pattern
Prof David Leon, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said: "In virtually all countries in the world, women do have a slight advantage."

However, he said the gap was definitely closing in some countries.

Countries with lower levels of life expectancy, such as in sub-Saharan Africa, showed very little difference between the genders. This was due to the prevalence of infectious diseases which "are not picky about men and women", he said.

In countries that had defeated most infectious diseases, such as in Eastern Europe, "there is a much bigger difference, mostly dominated by lifestyle factors".

At one point in the 1990s, the gap between life expectancies in Russia reached 13 years. Prof Leon said it was an "absolutely massive" difference in a "very gendered society".

In his third class of countries, such as the UK, the gap in life expectancies is starting to narrow.

He said: "Men are getting a bit better behaved and women are adopting male life expectancy."

I posted that study here quite some time ago..scary isn';t it.  The gap between the haves and the have nots is widening dramatically, essentially eliminating the middle class all together.  Canada and the US are two of the countries where the gap is widening at the most rapid rate.

At the same time the gender gap narrows, the blue collar to white colllar gap has expanded dramatically. All the rhetoric about raising the retirement/social security ages is based on the fact that desk workers will live into their 80's. Carpenters, masons, and pipefitters are supposed to work till they drop so that lawyers can have 20 years worth of 'Golden Years'. I forget the exact numbers, but it was something on the order of a ten year rise in life expectancy for white collar opposed to a one year rise for blue collar.

I just throw out ideas, that come to my mind.
When I see an article or hear a news story, I don't just take it as fact, I begin to ask questions.

Since I'm always half joking, you read me better than you realize :0

So they found the cure for the common Succubus.
“Religious traditions hold that repeated intercourse with a Succubus may result in the deterioration of health or even death.
In modern fictional representations, a succubus may or may not appear in dreams and is often depicted as a highly attractive seductress or enchantress; whereas, in the past, succubi were generally depicted as frightening and demonic.”

You're asking me if the article/author took something into account...

I have a very difficult time reading you, my furry friend. Are you kidding around, or are you seriously asking me that question?

Because if you're serious, how on EARTH could I possibly know what the author did and didn't take into account when writing the article???

I will tell you that I feel really bad for my career gal friends that work to bring home the bacon and still have most of the responsibility for keeping the house running.  They take care of kids, schedules of kids (which can get complicated), housework, cooking, and are still expected to be a hot babe.  Yes, their husbands work as well but the division of labor in the household is rarely equal.   This would not fly with me.

I've told my husband that if I go back to work----  to prepare himself with half the kid/house/cooking duty.  We'd probably not have to worry about who goes first as we'd be so sick of fighting about chores that we'd both volunteer to go.  And whomever is left could enjoy peace and quiet.

So anyhoo, that is just my thought on El's comments about the shift in women working and these statistics.

Does that article take into account medical advances that  keep people going longer?

Hmm..men have traditionally held the more stressful jobs.  Interesting take El..lol.

I just recently read a study that shows that although the number of women financially responsible for their families well being has increased dramatically.  No surprise there.  What was interesting is that in the home, women are still maintaining the majority of the traditional female responsibilities.  So although women are working longer hours, men don't seem to be helping out more out home.  No surprise your beginning to live longer...such easy lives your living...lol.

And next time you say stay at home mom is easy, be prepared for me to come through the screen at you!!  I work out of the home 3 days a week and in the home the rest of time.  At work I get a lunch break.  Plus, my staff does what I say and no one throws food at me!!  Just kidding El, you know I think your your hysterical!

Watch out girls... here we come!

Finally SOMETHING goes our way.

Heck, we've been hunting & gathering since the dawn of mankind, while the women'folk sit at home in the cave, doing nothing but taking care of the kids & keeping said cave in order (easy job, btw, being a stay-at-home-mom/cavemaker*), so it's about time that we start living as long as the female'kind!!!

Men have traditionally had the more stressful & dangerous jobs, and tend to partake in the more physically demanding sports & lifestyles, so it's no surprise to me that we don't live as long (besides the fact that we deal with stress differently than does the fairer sex.

*I was kidding about the stay-at-home-mom job being easy, by the way. I honestly can't think of many jobs much more stressful, difficult, time-consuming & challenging that staying at home with the kiddo's and taking care of the cave.
