Military services outline their spending cut plans

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2013/02/06/military-services-sequestration-plan-panetta/1896401/

"The Air Force plans to cut aircraft maintenance by one-third, eliminate support for popular military air shows and cut support to more than 30 weapons systems if the mandatory budget cuts set to go into effect March 1 are not stopped or adjusted, military budget documents obtained by USA TODAY show.

The Army says the same forced cuts mean they will have to cut funding for counter-IED efforts, intelligence and surveillance aircraft and new soldier equipment. All of these cuts will happen, the services say, if Congress and the White House don't hold off the cuts required by a summer 2011 budget deal.

The Navy would slash by more than half the number flying hours for its warplanes on aircraft carriers in the Middle East.

It would also not send an aircraft carrier task force scheduled to go to the Persian Gulf.........."

My personal view is that the time for the US to be the world's policeman is long past and our military budget is one of the main things that's breaking our country's back financeally. My fear, however, is that there will be no change in our foreign affairs policy, we'll continue to try to 'do more with less', and our service men (and women) willl be put in harm's way to further someone's political agenda.
Lobbyists for munitions manufactures hold way to much sway over our foreign policy.

Somehow I detect a bit of "scare tactics" with this whole thing. I'm sure there are things they can trim without endangering pilots or the American people....... kinda like budget talks when they hold Medicare and SS hostage to get what they want.

I think so too. I hope so, yikes.

This shouldn't be happening...I understand the military needs to be cut but not this drastically..Congress needs to just come on and do their jobs...Geez...

Love to watch the military air shows, such as the Blue Angels, etc, but are they really necessary? It takes hundreds/thousands of hours of air time to learn to fly in formation like they do and while that may be necessary for battle conditions, is it really necessary for air shows? Military aircraft fly over my house, in formation, on a regular basis.

Aircraft  maintenance and other things are a different story......having flown airplanes myself, I'd never advocate sending an airplane up without the proper maintenance.

I've got a lot of mixed emotions about the subject.  I do however agree with your thought on being asked to do "more with less" and that will be putting our service people more into harms way.

I also agree that we don't need to be the worlds watch dog anymore.  Everything the UN gets involved with ends up costing us in the long run.
