Lovers of the famous Leonardo da Vinci masterpiece Mona Lisa have been wondering about the secret behind those sly eyes for hundreds of years, but few if any ever thought they could contain an actual code.

"To the naked eye, the symbols are not visible but with a magnifying glass, they can clearly be seen," Silvano Vinceti of Italy's National Committee for Cultural Heritage told Britain's The Guardian newspaper.

In the left eye is a tiny L and V which Vinceti said could simply be a secret initial signature by Leonardo da Vinci. It's the right eye, however, that leave experts and conspiracy theorists scratching their heads.

"It is very difficult to make them out clearly, but they appear to be the letters CE, or it could be the letter B," Vinceti said. Vinceti also said the number 72, or possibly and L and the number 2, are also visible in arch of the bridge that is seen in the background of the painting.

"From the preliminary investigations we have carried out, we are confident they are not a mistake and were put there by the artist," Vinceti said.

Among the theories as to what the message could be in the symbols, Vinceti said it's possible they could reveal the painting's model, one of the art world's greatest mysteries.

Antique Book Store Prompts Investigation
Vinceti said he thought to reexamine the masterpiece after a colleague stumbled upon an old book in an antique book store that talked about hidden messages in the painting.

Vinceti is among a team of historians determined to discover the truth about the Mona Lisa, even if it means exhuming da Vinci's body. One popular theory holds that the model for the painting is actually da Vinci himself. Skull measurements could help experts determine exactly how similar the model and da Vinci may have looked.

Ya that's the great thing about art. It's open to anyone's interpretation. Some say Mona Lisa is in fact a portrait of the artist's mother, himself, his girlish lover, even a hermaphrodite - representing several persons at the same time or Mary Magdalene.

I think Mona Lisa is unattractive. Her smile to me is creepy. I think she's smiling over us all forever asking why she is smiling. I think the smile looks a little amused/smug, however sad and happy so I think she's laughing at us for our obsession with her.

I dunno. Odd painting. I like L.H.O.O.Q. by Duchamp better lol.

It's rumored among some experts that the model for the Mona Lisa was Leonardo himself. That's why she is so mysterious: she is a man lol!

And to clarify... I've always thought the Laura Secord girl looks like the Mona Lisa girl.

Yummm.... Laura Secord.

One of the things about Canadia that I really miss. Oh sure, I miss Hockey Night in Canada and Tim Horton's, but there's something about Laura Secord chocolates that sets them apart from just about any & all equivalent brands here in the US.

Thank you Frank P. O’Connor... thank you very much.

I agree. I think it's the whole mysteriousness of this painting that has intrigued so many.
Maybe it really is his initials? And maybe it's the initials of the model too? Who knows. I like the idea of the hidden treasure though, lol.

I think the whole great thing about this painting is because it is so unknown. Do you think if we knew everything behind it we would still appreciate and love it as much?

I love art but this is going a little far. It's just way too creepy...All that just for the "truth" about Mona and what if there is no truth?

Anyways, it's kinda strange with the markings in her eyes. Maybe it's his combination to treasure he has hidden somewhere lol :D
