No-Fly Zone

The British MOD grounded and began scarpping the last operational GR-9 Harriers in December 2010, leaving the Brit8ish Carrier Ark Royal with no aircraft and the British without a seaborne strike force, although the aircraft had an operational life of at least five more years.

After much dithering, America's number one golf and basketball champion decided to place United States strike aircraft under United Nations operational control to enforce a no-fly zone in Libya.

What's your opinion?

I can't actually choose any of the choices above.  I personally think the right decision has been reached in that the International Community is working together to help resolve this issue.  I think Gadafi is a butcher and will not hesitate to commit what will amount to genocide.  I do not think the US should have to be fully responsible here, it should be a united effort.  And working through the UN is the correct way to do this.  I agree with how things are being handled...I think it's best for all.

I voted for the third option not under the UN control

I voted yes because it's closest to how I view things.  First off, I'd like to compliment the President (no sarcasm, and the Congress too) for being willing to see the problems here for what they are.  They've thrown religion out the window right now (the right thing to do as this has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with a nut case) and are dealing with this situation while NATO hops on board.

With that said, we should have dealt with this Gaddafhi jerk a long time ago.  We had opportunities and let them slide for reasons you and I will never know.  And as usual, it is America stepping up.... which for me is starting to be tiring.  I haven't heard one liberal complain about this yet, and you can bet all the chips you've got that if we had a Republican in office, he'd get the full blame.  The people would be outraged!!!!  Typical for American politics.  (Good news is, libs can still blame Bush and Cheney.  There has to be a tie between the two..... oh, oil!  It worked for the last couple outings!)

Now, if we do end up knocking this guy around.... we are going to be obligated to set the country back up.  How do we go about that?  Sanctions, in the long run, hurt the people.... not the government.  So now what?

I do not want to sound like a war monger, but if we do have to go do this, I suggest a campaign like the first gulf war.  We scared the world.... the world backed off of America, and the whole war was what... less than a week?

I hear what your saying Brice, but there are some differences here.  First off, it's not just the US stepping up.  This is a joint effort through the International Community.  There are several countries involved which is why it went through the UN.  The reality is that the US is the most powerful country in the world, so of course they wind up with the most "fire power", but this also involved allies.  Also, the Libyans have made it very clear they don't want to be an "occupied" country.  All they want is help getting rid of Ghadaffi.  They didn't even want that at first, but they are sadly outmanned and outgunned.  This is a country of highly educated people and it is an extremely wealthy country.  I really don't think they will be looking for help getting set up.  It's a country I have had the priviledge of visiting, and they are far from a poverty stricken backward country. They are not ruled by religion either..they are quite with the times actually.  They are very determined to handle most of this themselves....they don't want "boots on the ground" so to speak.  They are getting what they asked for with the no fly zone, but they do want to do the majority here on their own.  So a very different situation from Afghanistan or other previous situations.  This is more assistance then doing it for them.  They are awfully brave and in my opinion, to be admired.

Also, just food for thought...this has to involve the entire free world.  Things are getting worse.  First Egypt, now Bahrain, Yemen, Libya...the whole middle east is heating up and becoming more unstable then ever.  These people want freedom and are willing to die for it. There have been stirrings in Saudi Arabia and other countries.  The next few years will be an interesting time in that part of the world.

Sorry, one last thing...what is super interesting about this is that the Arab League is even supporting this move....this is a story to watch.

I truly believe that love or hate Obama, you have much to be proud of in how your President is handling this whole situation.  He isn't trying to be the hero here or make headlines, he is trying to do what's right.  If he had done this as a unilateral move, it would not have gone over well at all  But he is doing it with the partners of the US...and even some who are not traditionally partners.  Says a lot for him.

I can't speak for his internal policies, I don't know enough about them.  But Internationally, he makes you look good if that counts for anything.  I do know opinion about him in the US varies and have read that many are disappointed in him. But just in this specific situation, he has handled it well from an International perspective.  That's all I mean by what I said...the Libya situation.  The rest of it...I don't know enough about it to make an intelligent comment.

Referring back to the post about the Brits scrapping the Harrier, I spoke to my bro this morning in UK and he was talking about that very thing ,the Brits are very unhappy with that, and the way Cameron is handling it , the removing of their Sea defense ships and the Harrier was a marvellous plane , just lifted off like a helicopter. I had a chuckle at your comment about the no1 Golf and basketball champion ...

I am proud of Obama on this. I think he is handling it as well as one could. And as far as his stats in the polls, it appears he is doing very well for this time in his term. In fact, he seems to be more popular than anyone that to date could run against him. That says alot imo.

I also heard he told lybia to cease fire and gadaffi step down or face military action. I think we should send in a drone and take him out and be done with it. But I doubt that would go over to well on the international level now would it. We all have rules for this kind of thing.

So to sum it all up, I too think things are being handled as they should be.

Obama's favorable ratings have been increasing lately based on the recent polls I've been seeing.

The Libyan issue is troubling.
There are other atrocities which have been committed and are being committed and we haven't engaged. There seems to something about the Middle East that makes us think we should and can intervene.

And has anyone mentioned the fact that we can't afford to do anything about Libya?

I am amazed that the middle class in this country is getting crushed and we can't afford to help them but we can afford to fund forays into countries abroad.

We better start doing things in this country because we have a lot of urgent problems right here.

Mike

Lol, we even sent our 6 planes over.  I'm glad we are helping, but think 6 planes is sort of funny.  But, every little bit helps.  You are so correct...this is a united effort as well it should be.  I think if the US had of done this alone it would have just fed the anti US sentiment in the Middle East, which would have fed Al Quada's propaganda, putting you even more at risk - would have made a great recruiting tool for them.  So this was quite the smart move on the part of your President.  It's interesting though...Obama's speech said that his mandate was to protect the innocent.  I tend to agree with his stance...it shouldn't be about fighting another war, it should be about protecting innocent's from being slaughtered.  The French stance is to topple the regime.  Much more aggressive.  I suppose the end result is somewhat the same, but I think taking the stance the US is will garner more support, especially from those who are war shy (rightfully so).  I know the Canadian forces that are there are on the same page, at least according to our Prime Minister.  Not to wage war, but to prevent it.  Very different from Iraq or Afghanistan, don't you think?

In all honesty, now that the allied forces are there, I highly doubt this will take long to be over.  Libya has almost no army to speak of (Ghadaffi disbanded it years ago due to paranoia of a military coupe).  So now that action is being taken, I truly think this will be short, and hopefully lives will be saved.  Now I have to wonder if there will be any involvement in Yemen or Bahrain. Same time of situation is going on there, with Yemen being particularly violent.  It's a big scary, but this is a huge move towards democracy, and that is a positive.

Mike, I know what you mean.  Parts of Africa have been brutal for years now..absolutely horrible things are happening.  Sadly, that part of the world has not much to offer (oil!), so the west doesn't seem to want to help.  I don't mean just the US, I am talking about the free countries in general - the UN I guess.  But, whatever the true motivation behind the action being taken in Libya, innocent lives will be saved, so I can live with it.

I would suggest that Congress puts an end to all the foreign aid we send , why are we sending aid to China and Russia .? we dole out $68.7 million to Russia 12 million to China  647  million to Nigeria even 20 million set aside for communist Cuba check out www.foreignassistance .gov   Egypt , Israel. The US doles out $58 Billion a year to 20 agencies  Where does the money come from ...taxpayers of course .....

It's like that here 90% of Qeensland has been declared a disaster area due to the floods and cyclone we have just been through, yet as our people struggle to get back on their feet we are sending billions of dollars in aid to many countries around the world, when do we start to put our own countries and our own monetary stability first.

Just for curiosity sake I decided to google our foreign monetary aid documents-

At the moment the budget for foreign monetary aid is 4.3 billion per year,it is set to double to 8.6 billion over the next 5 years.

As far as I can tell this doesn't include relief efforts and other programs that we send overseas.

We are a small country as far as population goes, our taxes should be helping Australians,

I understand other countries need help but it is so frustrating when a lot of their problems occur because of civil unrest,I don't believe money should be sent to these countries,it always ends up in the wrong hands.Send food or set up programs so they can help themselves.

Countries that want aid should not complain about the donors checking what is happening with the aid.

Yes.

After due consultation with the United Nations, and after Libya was provided with information on the targeting sites (which required their approval), and 24 hours notice, we just launched 112 BGM 109's, which only cost $1,400,000 each.

The trouble is "creating a no-fly" zone is not an appropriate military mission for the United States military. That is not an objective in itself.
