Not a question, and I have no link

I know this goes against the grain, but I had to comment on this.  I googled, "How do I get a copy of my s.s card?".  The link came up and I clicked on it.  I began to fill out the information, then hit the button to proceed.... they want $20 for a copy of the card.... $20!!!!  They will send you a pdf file copy for $10....

How is this country broke charging fee's like this?

Once in a while, rules can be bent....... lol

Sorry to hear both of you guys are going through this.... I once had debt run up on my debit card (straight out of the checking account), but fortunately, our bank gave us back the $ (nearly $1000).... their reasoning is that it's easier to give back the $ than find and prosecute the person(s) who used my number (the card never left my possession, but the purchases were all made in Louisiana and I happened to be vacationing in SD at the time)......

Having someone take over your identity must be a nightmare.

I think in the case of needing a new SS card, I'd want to physically go to the SS office with necessary documentation to prove who I am vs applying online.  If it's easy to do online, anyone who might get your SSN could get a card and wreak even more havoc with your life.

Always be cautious and remember, sometimes, it's just best to do things in person.

On the issue of the Feds not being able to track the woman down -- how is it that the Dept of Agriculture can tell you all about the life of a calf born in TN, moved to MO, when she was bred, the calves she had and where they went, when they were bred, then the cow was moved to Canada, calved again and they know where those calves are - this goes on for generations of cattle - but the Feds can't locate a single woman in CO that stole someone else's identity?

You need to get the Dept of Agriculture on the case!!

No, I'm not making light of either of your situations - just seems ironic that Dept of Agriculture can keep up with cattle better than the Feds can with criminals. Scares the heck out of me......

Wow, what an ordeal you two are going through.  I have heard about this, and what a nightmare getting things straightened out.  I remember when our credit card no. got cloned..that alone was a huge nightmare, but fortunately we were able to put an alert on our credit histories to watch for things.  So far nothing else.

Have you heard about these so called parents stealing their kids identities and ruining their credit?  I call them so called parents because they may have given birth, but the parenting part seems to elude them.  They take out credit cards, etc. in their kids names, run them up, then never pay up.  To their own children!  And it's so easy. We have had two credit card apps in my sons name sent to us, and he is only 21 months old.  If I was dishonest and didn't care about my child, it would be so easy to do. Crazy.

I hope both of you are able to get this situation straightened out.  You being the victims, yet paying the price.  So wrong.

Sounds familiar.  My wife's ordeal started out with a hispanic fellow in Golden Colorado, working for the Coors company.  We got a tax bill for the ss#, and my wife had to prove she was the rightful owner of the ss#, and had not been in Colorado for a decade, and was not Javier Pena.

I think she has a file too, and the FEDs just add to it, I guess.  This is a situation were the names do not match either.  It is a wreck.,

We tried the Fed route also but got little help (or should I say No Help). We have a file about 1.5” thick and are Registered. When we go to get a loan, they delete all the fraud and restore our credit but, it is a major pain in the A$$. They also have my youngest daughter’s SS#. These people are so bold, once they took a job in Alabama and took out Health insurance under my Wife and daughters name. We’ve even had Utilities Companies in Chicago turn accounts over to collection agencies because they would get utilities in my wife’s name then move without paying the bill. It seems to me, it would be easy to catch them but nobody cares.

I was at the government site for s.s.  I also know about stolen identity.  My wife's identity was stolen and it is not completely ruining our credit.... but damned near.  We even have the FEDS looking into it... doesn't mean much, because they cannot track the woman down.  Somewhere in Colorado....

I would be careful. I just got a copy of my S.S. Card and had to go to the S.S. Office to get it. I also had to prove it was me asking for it. My wife’s identity was stolen because of her S.S.# over 15 years ago. We are still suffering the consequences. Last week we went to Sam’s to open an account. We were shocked to find out an account was already opened in her name and was being used quite frequently. She has had Unpaid Credit Cards come up on her Credit Report from as far away as Chicago. We’ve tried everything and nothing we do can stop it. We even looked into getting a new S.S.# for her but was told, by doing that they would have to erase her entire history. Could you imagine trying to get a loan and nothing on your history but your Date of Birth?

Since you didn’t have a Link you may find this interesting.
