Obama Calls for Compromise in Immigration Reform

Obama Calls for Compromise in Immigration Reform

President Obama delivered his first major speech on immigration Thursday with a call for Congressional approval of comprehensive reform. Obama said he hopes to reach a middle ground between granting full amnesty and mass deportations for undocumented immigrants.

President Obama: "Ultimately, our nation, like all nations, has the right and obligation to control its borders and set laws for residency and citizenship. And no matter how decent they are, no matter their reasons, the 11 million who broke these laws should be held accountable. Now, if the majority of Americans are skeptical of a blanket amnesty, they are also skeptical that it is possible to round up and deport 11 million people."

R Glass:  I think I like this Montana cowboy!

Both sides of the aisle have their hands dirty on this one.

So far as the statement that there are more troops on the border now than at any other time, well, that is a bit misleading.  This is from http://www.ng.mil/news/archives/2010/06/062410-Southwest.aspx

“Support from the National Guard – but yet a clear division: them not arresting, not engaging in enforcement activities directly attributed to any illegal crossings of either aliens, narcotics or things of that nature – … has worked out very well,” Aguilar said. “The National Guard … will bring us a tremendous amount of capability in securing our borders.”

They will not be armed or on the front lines.  Also, what about the thousands of acres of National parkland closed to Americans for the exclusive use of drug smugglers and coyotes.  Our government does not patrol this land.  Just closed it for use by Americans.  I guess this just leaves Arizona law enforcement to serve as target practice for the smugglers.

This is the breakdown by state of this deployment: Arizona would get 524 National Guard troops, Texas would get 250, California 224 and New Mexico 72, officials said. Another 130 would be at a national liaison office.  At a June 3 meeting with Obama, Gov Jan Brewer was promised the majority of troops.   This paltry number of National Guardsmen look to me to be little more than a token.

I do agree that we all are united in wanting something done.  However, the nation is divided on how to do this.  Most polls indicate that we want the border secured prior to  discussing amnesty.  Most Americans oppose amnesty as well.  There are vocal advocates on both sides of it.  Personally, I agree wit the majority.

"23. Thinking about the issue of immigration, what do you think should happen
first -- do you think the federal government should secure the country’s borders
first, or should Congress pass new immigration legislation first?
SCALE: 1. Government should secure the borders first
2. Congress should pass new legislation first 3. (Both simultaneously)
4. (Don’t know)
Secure borders Pass new (Both
first legislation first simultaneously) (Don’t know)
29-30 Jun 10 59% 30 6 6
Democrats 44% 41 8 7
Republicans 72% 22 3 3
Independents 65% 22 8 6"

So the next few weeks should be interesting.  Does anyone know when the troops will actually arrive?  Last I heard they'd not yet been deployed.

But I still think the Montana Cowboy made the most sense of all of them!

Sounds like a good idea!

Montana Cowboy's solution to save Gasoline, with side benefits:

OBAMA wants us to cut the amount of gasoline we use.....

The best way to stop using so much gasoline is to deport 15
million illegal immigrants! That would be 15 million less people
using our gas. The price of gas would come down.....

Bring our troops home from Afghanistan to guard the borders....
When they catch an illegal immigrant crossing the Border, hand him a
canteen, rifle and some ammo and ship him to Afghanistan ...
Tell him if he wants to come to AMERICA then he must serve a
tour in OUR military....Give him a soldier's pay while he's there and tax him on it......
After his tour, he will be allowed to become a citizen since he defended
this country. He will also be registered to be taxed and be a legal resident.....

This option will probably deter illegal immigration and provide a
solution for the troops in Afghanistan and the aliens trying
to make a better life for themselves.. .......

If they refuse to serve, ship them to Afghanistan anyway,
without the canteen, rifle or ammo.....

Problem solved.....

Good insight, and yes, I think all of us are of one mind these days. Now maybe something will get done.

This problem has been brewing for quite awhile. Both parties are equally guilty for allowing it to get out of control. The American people are finally fed up and demanding the Government to fix the problem.
Obama just happened to be president when the poo hit the fan.
Pointing fingers is irrelevant. We have a problem Mr. President, fix it.
He made the statement “We have more troops guarding our borders now than any other time in history.” I thought to myself, maybe he should think some this stuff through before reading it out loud. What I heard was “We have more troops guarding our borders now than any other time in history and our borders are still not secure.”
Unlike the Bail Outs, The Stimulus, and Health Care Reform, I think the American People will demand to see a complete plan before supporting it.
Drastic steps are inevitable and I don’t think there will be a lot of room for compromise. Republican, Democrat, and Independent voters are pretty much of one mind on this issue and the politicians know it.
If Obama comes out with anything less than an “Iron Fist Approach”, don’t be surprised if he doesn’t get full support from the Democrats. They are smart enough to know, Obama cannot guarantee that they will be re-elected so they will be forced to do their job, which is to represent the people that voted them in office.

I think the republicans dont want to stir anything that will make them unpopular with the people or to cooperate with anything that might cause obama to be more accepted. There future depends on it. But what I dont get is, do they think the american public cannot see what is and has been going on all this time?  I think some people are going to be surprised come november. I just dont think americans are stupid people. I think the republican party is coming out looking very very unfavorable and they have only themselves to blame. They would have much more of a chance if they had been doing something besides saying no to every thought and dissing obama on every turn. I think that is going to backfire if they dont change their ways soon.

Once again I find myself perplexed.  Has the illegal immigration issue not been an issue for a very long time now?  Or has it just been a problem since Obama came into office? Somehow I doubt that.  In all the polls I saw, the American's biggest concerns were the economy.  So it would make sense he first addressed this issue, along with health care.  I know, I know, he didn't do what some wanted, but he did address them.  So now he is trying to address the illegal immigration issue (again, something that has been a problem for a long time now), and he get's beaten up for that as well?  I don't get it.
