Obama creates task force on children who enter U.S. illegally

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama established an interagency group on Monday to handle the growing influx of children coming to the United States illegally without parents or relatives accompanying them.

In a memo that describes an "urgent humanitarian situation," Obama has put the Federal Emergency Management Agency in charge of coordinating humanitarian relief to the children, including housing, care, medical treatment and transportation.

The Obama administration estimates that about 60,000 "unaccompanied minors" - children under 18 - will enter the United States illegally this year. It projects that number to grow to nearly 130,000 next year.

As recently as 2011, the number was only some 6,000.

Many of the children are from Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico, and are fleeing domestic abuse or violent gangs that prey on children as young as 12, White House officials said.

Poverty also contributes to decisions to leave their home countries, according to immigration advocacy groups.

In making the journey to the United States, they often are trying to reunite with a parent or other relative.

Illegal immigration is a deeply divisive issue in the U.S. Congress and Republicans blamed the flood of children streaming into the country on Obama's policies.

House of Representatives Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte of Virginia said his panel would look into the issue in coming weeks.

"The recent surge of children and teenagers from Central America showing up at our southern border is an administration-made disaster and now President Obama is calling in FEMA to mitigate the damage," Goodlatte said.

He blamed "lax immigration enforcement policies" by the administration, even though it has aggressively sought the removal of millions of undocumented residents.

Last month, the administration announced it had opened a temporary shelter for some of the children at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. It is nearly at its capacity of housing 1,200 children, officials said.

Another facility will open at Naval Base Ventura County in Southern California, Mark Greenberg, assistant secretary at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, said on Monday.

The California facility will hold a maximum of 600 children, officials said.

White House Director of Domestic Policy Cecilia Munoz said Monday's action was prompted by several concerns, including rises in the number of girls and children under the age of 13 who have been crossing the border.

'PERILOUS' JOURNEYS

The growing numbers of unaccompanied minors are placing budgetary pressures on Congress and the White House as they prepare spending bills for next year, Reuters reported last week.

Homeland Security Deputy Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said federal officials would focus resources on combating smuggling networks that bring the children into the United States and would work with Central American governments to spread the word that the journey from their home countries is "perilous."

Many children do not realize the dangers they can encounter in leaving their home countries, including sexual assaults, starvation, forced labor and injuries from falling from freight trains that they jump on in Mexico.

Kind of fortunate that they didn't just pass the bill, or you'd be blaming them for this current issue.

The thing is broken from top to bottom.  It needs addressing and we need to prioritize some things.  Never, ever should an illegal or spending on illegals come before our Veterans.  Veterans should never have to wait for medical care, and we set up clinics on MILITARY BASES no less, to make sure these illegals are medically taken care of, fed, housed.  Are you kidding me?

Veterans are deserved of that kind of treatment.  They, having served their country should be able to walk on to a MILITARY BASE (because they served in the military) and get the kind of help we are giving away.

We can't afford to throw more money at the VA until we figure out everything that is wrong with it and fix it.  But, that is what we normally do is throw money at broken programs and wonder why they can't right themselves.  Its a horrible policy!  Republicans and democrats alike are guilty of it, and that doesn't matter unless you say you're going to fix it and that doesn't happen.  That's either lying or evolving, depending on which side of the table you're on.

How could Obama be on target when he knew nothing about what was happening?

Besides that, it isn't even about politics.  We take better care of immigrants who've done nothing for this country than we do Veterans who did more than most of us can imagine.  These people walk in and get medical care while vets are placed on waiting lists... that's great.  Thank god "he is on target".  Hate to see him more off target.

The money we are not spending equals cuts.  Costs are skyrocketing and funding is down.  I've already pointed that out to you.  The fraud, false record keeping and accepting money for procedures never performed is a bit of a cut.  That money didn't go into the VA coffers, but... who cares.

I don't care if republicans had a hand in this... it doesn't matter, only if you want to politicize the matter.  Blame all of them, including the President.  He said he was going to fix this years ago and it hasn't happened.

Where's Bush when you need him?  He's available for more blame.

Because voting DOWN a bill to fund a broken program is a bad thing?

Here's a thought... if it's broken, don't throw more money at it.

Backwards Democrat thinking.

I also did some research about improvements to VA under Obama, seems he is on target in most areas.

The above link talks about republicans voting down a funding bill as recently as Feb of this year.

So you will need to show me where all these cuts yer talking about are coming from other than that bill republicans voted against.

Say's the "Independent" (not the Democrat)...

If you can't see what Brice is saying when he say's there are going to be cuts in benefits for vets, while there'll be PLENTY of money for the illegal aliens that swim across our border, then you're senile.

Look at the shape of the VA?  You watch the news at all?  Obama says there is a problem with the VA, and he is "mad as hell" and that he will get to the bottom of it... since he didn't know anything about the current state of the VA.  That's news to you?

Look, they ain't spending money on veterans and each year the cost of care goes up, so that kind of equals a cut, then when you add up the fraud involved, (I think that has something to do with the President being "mad as hell".)  More money going out than money coming in... = a cut.

When I read this story I imagined putting the war veterans in one hand and the illegal kids coming here in the other.  I don't know why I did that.... oh wait, yes I do.  We are going to find money in the budget for this while cutting benefits for veterans?

This country has its head screwed on wrong.

Those same kids that flee gang violence get taken in by gangs here because they have no one else. Not a good trade off for them and even worse trade for America.

Yes... because creating a taskforce will solve this problem.

Build a fence.
Place land-mines along it.
Build another fence so that Murcan's don't get blown up.
End of story/problem solved.

Don't come here Mexicans! There are NO jobs! We cannot afford you!
