POLICE: DOZEN PEOPLE WATCHED GANG RAPE
Richmond, Calif. * Police said that as many as a dozen people watched a 15-year-old girl get beaten and gang-raped outside her high school homecoming dance without reporting it.
One suspect was in custody Monday, but police said that as many as 6 other men attacked the girl over a two-our period Friday night outside Richmond High School.
"She was raped, beaten, robbed and dehumanized by several suspects who were OK enough with it to behave that way in each other's presence," Lt. Mark Gagan said.
"What makes it even more disturbing is the presence of others. People came by, saw what was happening and failed to report it."
The victim remained hospitalized with injuries that weren't considered life-threatening.
Manual Ortega, 19, was arrested and is being held on $800,000 bail. He is not a student at the school.
Police said the girl left the dance and was walking to meet her father for a ride home when a classmate invited her to join a group drinking in the courtyard. The victim had drank a large amount of alcohol by the time the assault began, police said.
Officers received a tip about a possible assault on campus and fund the girl semi-conscious near a picnic table.

Ok, there's so many things wrong with this story I don't even know where to begin. To start off with, it's very disturbing that we have people in this world who think it's ok to treat another human being this way (much less a young teenage girl, who happens to be 2 years younger than my own daughter. *Shudders*), they seem to be ok with being open about this assault, not even hiding their shameful deeds. BUT......Here's the kicker!!! At least a DOZEN people witnessed this attack and did NOTHING???? NOT ONE OF THESE WITNESSES REPORTED THIS ATTACK!!! What the heck??? How can they live with themselves??? Is this what society has turned to now??!!
Is this not a wake up call??? What are we teaching our kids? Are we teaching them to do the right thing no matter what the cost? Are we teaching them right from wrong at all even? Are we teaching them to stand up for the defenseless ones? Are we teaching them morals and values? What are we teaching our young men? Are we teaching them that women are to be used, abused and discarded like unwanted trash? Or are we teaching them that all life is precious and needs to be respected? What has happened to our society that would not only produce young men who think it's ok to treat a young lady like this but also people who will stand idly by and watch?
People, this is scary! We are seeing this lack of concern and respect for others more and more. We've got to teach our children. We've got to be good role models. Because, let me tell you something, the world will not set that good example. Only we can to our children.
I am just sickened by this story. May God heal this poor girl, not just from her physical pain but more importantly, from the emotional scars this can leave. My prayers go to this girl and her family.
