Bachmann: Irene is God's message for Washington
(Reuters) - For Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann, Hurricane Irene and last week's earthquake in the eastern United States were a message from God that Washington needs to change its policies.
Even as Irene was beginning its raking course up the East Coast over the weekend, which killed 21 people and caused widespread flooding and power outages, Bachmann told senior citizens in Poinciana, Florida, on Saturday that the hurricane was an "act of God" that Washington should heed.
The Minnesota congresswoman, who has gained media prominence for her fiery attacks on Democratic President Barack Obama and against big government, recalled Washington and the east had already felt a 5.8 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday.
"Washington, D.C., you'd think by now they'd get the message. An earthquake, a hurricane. Are you listening? The American people have done everything they can, and now it's time for an act of God and we're getting it," she said, drawing some laughs from her audience.
Bachmann is a favorite of the fiscally conservative Tea Party movement and of religious social conservatives, but recent Republican presidential contender polls have shown her lagging behind Texas Governor Rick Perry and moderate Mitt Romney, who appeals to the party's business wing.

I just saw the latest poll. Perry is leading with 32% and also has 37% of the tea party support. Romney at 18% and Bachmann only at 12%. I know it's early, but that cannot be good for her. I truly don't see this happening. Thank goodness.

I'd rather any discussion about the hurricane be about providing appropriate disaster relief to people who were affected, whether they experienced a direct loss of family or had their home or business destroyed. No one deserves this by any means and even if the comment didn't directly imply that it would hurt to among people who were affected (thankfully where I live was not but other areas directly along the coast were). The same would be true of any commemoration of 9-11. I don't want to see any politician on either side use that for political gain.

because the thread started by El is about Bachmann's comments. Why is this such a big deal? Yes, they all say dumb things. There are posts on here about it all the time. I am not understanding (although I am trying to) your anger about this thread. But take it up with El if your mad, don't address comments like you did above toward me please. I have no doubt that there are a few people out there that wouldn't vote for a women. Just like there were some that wouldn't vote for a black man. I would be surprised if that were the majority though. She just shouldn't have said it, man, women or other. It just isn't funny.
I don't see this anywhere being confused with a sexually discriminating tone. It was a matter of bad timing. Look, if I would have said that on the national stage, it would have been stupid... not sexist at all. If and when a man candidate says something stupid, I'll be the first guy to point that out.

First off, I am not picking on you margy, if thats what you're thinking. And absolutely I've heard of Merkel.... and if I hear her say something stupid I'll call her out on it too. I am calling Bachmann out. It was dumb move in the respect that people are looking for someone to vote for right now. Some people are riding a think line between Bachmann or any of the other viable candidates, and when you say something like "Gods will" at a time like this, it is any one of a few things.
There are a lot of people in this country that will not cast a vote if someone comes off too strong, religiously. She may have potentially cost herself votes. Even if she was joking, this was bad timing. People lost their lives in this hurricane..... right now, joking about that is less than insensitive... its just dumb.

It doesn't matter that you think it was dumb ...it was my opinion i stick by it, just in case you dont know LOL there are a few women leaders in the world .heard of Merkel of Germany there are in fact 20 I suggest for real facts you google ...when you call other people dumb you should know what you are talking about.....America has had no women leaders ....

Hillary had/substance. IMO she's way more qualified to be President than Bachmann or Palin. . I would LOVE to see a woman Presidentt one day but the reality is, it may not happen for a LON LONG time b/c Unfortunately it IS a MAN's world. That's just reality.
