Obama: Seeger believed in the power of community
"NEW YORK (AP) -- President Barack Obama is paying tribute to Pete Seeger for reminding us where we come from and showing us where we need to go.
Seeger, the veteran folk singer, died Monday night at age 94. The writer of "If I Had a Hammer" and "Turn, Turn, Turn," he welded his music to activism on issues of American workers and the disadvantaged.
In a statement on Tuesday, President Obama said, "Once called 'America's tuning fork,' Pete Seeger believed deeply in the power of song. But more importantly, he believed in the power of community -- to stand up for what's right, speak out against what's wrong, and move this country closer to the America he knew we could be."
"Over the years," the President continued, "Pete used his voice -- and his hammer -- to strike blows for worker's rights and civil rights; world peace and environmental conservation. And he always invited us to sing along. For reminding us where we come from and showing us where we need to go, we will always be grateful to Pete Seeger. Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayer to Pete's family and all those who loved him."
Ol' Joe McCarthy would be tickled to know his delusions live on.

"McCarthy rose suddenly to national fame in February 1950 when he asserted in a speech that he had a list of "members of the Communist Party and members of a spy ring" who were employed in the State Department. McCarthy was never able to prove his sensational charge.....McCarthy died in Bethesda Naval Hospital on May 2, 1957, at the age of 48. The official cause of death was acute hepatitis; it is widely accepted that this was caused, or at least exacerbated, by alcoholism."
Pete outlived ol' Joe and continued to help farmers and working people up into his nineties still cheerfully asserting that "This land was made for you and me."

I admired Pete's commitment to his beliefs.
El~ you actually don't think being an anti-Vietnam activist is okay ? I have a bunch of PTSD friends who could argue that one with you.
Why must you label everyone ?
Yes he was a liberal but he was much more than that.
The man was a dedicated musician who believed music could help create change.
RIP
What a tremendous loss to humanity:
*Communist party member
*Labor movement activist
*Civil rights activist (that one's actually okay)
*Anti Vietnam activist
*Un-American Activities Committee questioned him
*Attended Mahattan Occupy march
*dropped out of Harvard (and took to the road)
*Sociology Professor (?)
That is about as liberal as they come, ladies & gentlemen...
