Does anyone remember the hot air balloon incident with the small child and the nutty publicity obsessed parents? These people are no different. It turns out that the child was never in danger but the parents were publicity obsessed. The poor girl's parents are no different. Anyone ever heard of child endangerment laws????
P.S. I might let my kid do this, if me and the whole Coast Guard were always 5 feet behind.
Surely these parents will now hold some kind of record for stupidity. I hope some one checks if the parents took out some large life insurance policy on their kid.
I was watching this story on the news last night. It would seem this family has a bit of a history of this sort of thing. Her older brother held the record for the youngest person to do this exact thing. He held it for only 42 days until a younger British boy beat it, then an even younger Australian girl. This kids were all treated like hero's upon their return. I guess this young girl then wanted to claim the record for herself. In an interview with her father, he said that they do nothing without talking to God first and getting his blessing. This family reminds me of that family that claimed the little boy was in a balloon that swept away...remember that one? Something is seriously wrong with families like this. Risking their childrens lives over publicity? I too hope this young girl is found safe and sound. But I feel even more strongly now that the parents need to be charged. I'm with you Sara...my son would do this over my dead body..
I truly hope they find this foolish young lady. And an investigation into her parents is in order. Her parents should assume financial responsibility for the search of their daughter. I don't care to pay the bill for irresponsible parents.
My 17 yr old son has a midnight curfew on non school days and 9pm for school days. My daughter's curfew is a bit stricter. Allowing either of them to do what this girl is doing? Over my dead body!!
My first thoughts in hearing this story was. "What were those parents thinking". 16 years old is a child! To me this is parental neglect, abuse, period. I hope they find her alive and well, but shame on MOM and DAD for allowing this situation! Unbelievable!
I have never done anything like that, so I guess I take things for granted. I can only imagine how dangerous some of these rescue missions can be. Are they going to charge the parents? There has to be some sort of repercussion, if only to send a message to others not to do things that are so stupid. Was the girl trying to set some sort of record or something? It really is a ridiculous idea. I cannot imagine letting a 16 year old kid do something like that.
It isn't simply costs. I used to fly search and rescue missions and there is a great deal of risk involved in flying in bad weather to locate someone who unnecessarily exposed themselves to danger. Volunteer helicopter crews have died flying such missions.
I am livid because this discussion took place before this youngster was permitted to make this unnecessary journey, which was essentially an ego trip.
How ridiculous to allow a child that age to do such a thing. Let's face it, at 16 she has neither the experience nor the common sense required. Teenagers make bad decisions, that's what they do. I think her parents should be charged.
We have a law here now due to people performing stupid stunts, or taking undue risks. If search and rescue has to go get you due to your own stupidity (ie: skiing in out of bounds areas, etc.), you have to pay the cost back. Perhaps that is what should happen here.
