Reid set to offer compromise to extend tax cut

http://nbcpolitics.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/12/04/9204033-reid-set-to-offer-compromise-to-extend-tax-cut

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will offer a compromise on Monday to extend a popular payroll tax cut, a fellow Democrat said on Sunday.

Appearing on the "Fox News Sunday" program, Senator Kent Conrad said Reid's proposal would cover the cost of extending the tax cut, set to expire at the end of this month, but he left it up to Reid to provide details on Monday.

The Democratic-controlled Senate last week defeated competing payroll tax cut extension plans by Democrats and Republicans, showing the need for the two sides to find common ground.

Conrad, a Democrat and chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, said Reid called him on Saturday and said he would offer on Monday "a compromise plan to extend the payroll tax.

Conrad said Reid's plan will be a "serious attempt to move this ball forward because we should not have a tax increase on the middle income. That just makes no sense in this economy."

In a pair of Senate votes last Thursday, Republicans and Democrats said no to each other's plans.

Republicans objected to Democratic calls to slap a new tax on those making more than $1 million to cover the projected $110 billion cost of extending the payroll tax cut.

And Democrats rejected the Republican proposal to pay for it by extending a pay freeze on federal workers and reducing the federal work force.

Conrad said Reid's plan would represent a compromise.

While he declined to released any details, Conrad said Reid's proposal would be fully paid for and not increase the nation's record $15 trillion debt.

"It will be paid for, it will be in a way that is credible and serious," the senator said.

How in the hell did Trump become relevant in this conversation?  Talking about poppycock...  Throwing your opinion around as a fact is poppycock.

This isn't a democrat or republican thing, as you are trying to make it.  It is a Reid thing.... he is as close to incompetent as one can be, and still be in office.  The guy has been losing popularity in Nevada for years, but still manages to get re-elected.  His last run was real close... democrats were voting for a republican  over Reid because of his incompetence and his turning his back on the masses.

Reid has groomed quite a few people in state politics in the state of Nevada.  His ideals are what mostly what runs the state, political party aside.  Some recent republicans have embraced Reid's model, and they failed....

Reid is in the group of "last people who should be giving financial planning advice" along Christie (republican).  We have to do better....

Don't muddy the waters with Trump.  He'd never get elected and is attention starved.  All Trump is trying to do is get some face time.  What is the usefulness of Trump moderating anything?  NONE... there is no relevance, so take Trump out of it.

"The Republican debate is being moderated by Don Trump."

I stand corrected - republican governors in Nevada since 1999.

It doesn't really matter because all of your statements were simply poppycock - nothing was relevant to anything of substance.

The Republican debate is being moderated by Don Trump. That peaks volumes about any and every Republican who participates. That's your party Brice and you ought to be proud as punch.

"It doesn't matter, but democrats were in charge of the state from 83-99"...

But $hit hit the fan when we had a republican President in office for 8yrs no?!......This isn't blaming, I'm just simply stating a fact.

Contrary to Mikes facts, republicans have not been in the governors office in Nevada since 1991.  It doesn't matter, but democrats were in charge of the state from 83-99...

Mike, you've missed the point completely.  Reid was involved with state politics for a couple of decades before he hit the national level.  Besides that, he has done the political boogie helped a lot of his cronies get jobs in that state by campaigning for the worst of them.  Reid has campaigned for a few of the PUBES too... but thats my point.  Think alike and act alike, then you get some of this

The national level is at 8.6%?  Wonderful... partially because too many people exhausted their benefits... Nevada is at about 13% and California is right there too.... Wyoming (where I am now and have been since 89 is at worst 5% unemployed.  This last election we elected our first republican governor in the last 12-16 years.  A predominantly republican state with a democrat governor.... our state is doing wonderfully... democrat's can take the credit for this.

It doesn't have to do with party affiliation.  It has to do with the individuals within those parties...

"Really?  Why would anyone listen to either of these people?  Their states are bankrupt and they want to give financial information or considerations to the nation? ...."

Brice, they're US Senators for heaven's sake! They do not control their states' fiscal or employment policies. They work for the federal government.

Nevada has had Republican Governors since 1991 right up to the present. Governorship probably has a great deal more relevancy to a state's fiscal and unemployment situations than does a member of Congress.

California - Republican Arnold has governed that state from 2003 through 2011.

You really should think this stuff over before you make these comments.

McCain was recently named as one of the most conservative members of Congress. He's from Arizona - 9% unemployment.
John A. Boehner  - The conservative Republican House Speaker is from Ohio - 9% unemployment.

The national average by the way is now at 8.6%.

Geez.

I agree, but here's the deal with Reid.  I heard this morning on an AP news feed that Nevada is second, only behind California in being broke as a state.  Nevada is either #1 or #2 in unemployment behind California....

So what we have here is Pelosi from California and Reid from Nevada... the nations most financially desperate states and the highest ranking democrats in DC behind the Pres and Vice Pres.... and they are trying to make financial deals for the nation?

Really?  Why would anyone listen to either of these people?  Their states are bankrupt and they want to give financial information or considerations to the nation?  How can you even look this guy in the face (Reid) and take him serious?  And for the life of me, how in the hell does Nevada keep electing this clown?  He is the most common denominator in the equation.

In the real world or the business world rather, Reid would be gone.... but would probably receive a giant financial reward for screwing everything up.

They all need to just agree and move on. It's getting really old now!! Our economy is in the $hitter and no one (in congress) seems to care!

Oh joy!  Good ol' Harry Reid came up with a compromise after getting his son appointed to the Henderson, Nevada city attorney position.  Glad he has priorities in line here.

Why did it take the brilliant one this long to come up with this idea?  Seems as if there were other compromises brought up in the past that the dems would have nothing to do with.  The repubs will surely stomp on this, as this is what politicians do but it is nothing that the dems haven't done before.
