Gov buying bullets

So the Government buys up the lions share of bullets so the average law abiding American citizen can have all the guns they want just no bullets... Hmmmmmm.... I know many of you here are anti gun but this sure seems alarming to me.

WASHINGTON — Online rumors about a big government munitions purchase are true, sort of.
The Homeland Security Department wants to buy more than 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition in the next four or five years. It says it needs them – roughly the equivalent of five bullets for every person in the United States – for law enforcement agents in training and on duty.
Published federal notices about the ammo buy have agitated conspiracy theorists since the fall. That's when conservative radio host Alex Jones spoke of an "arms race against the American people" and said the government was "gearing up for total collapse, they're gearing up for huge wars."
The government's explanation is much less sinister.
Federal solicitations to buy the bullets are known as "strategic sourcing contracts," which help the government get a low price for a big purchase, says Peggy Dixon, spokeswoman for the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Ga . The training center and others like it run by the Homeland Security Department use as many as 15 million rounds every year, mostly on shooting ranges and in training exercises.
Dixon said one of the contracts would allow Homeland Security to buy up to 750 million rounds of ammunition over the next five years for its training facilities. The rounds are used for basic and advanced law enforcement training for federal law enforcement agencies under the department's umbrella. The facilities also offer firearms training to tens of thousands of federal law enforcement officers. More than 90 federal agencies and 70,000 agents and officers used the department's training center last year.
The rest of the 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition would be purchased by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the federal government's second largest criminal investigative agency.
ICE's ammunition requests in the last year included:
_450 million rounds of .40-caliber duty ammunition
_40 million rounds of rifle ammunition a year for as many as five years, for a total bullet-buy of 200 million rounds
_176,000 rifle rounds on a separate contract
_25,000 blank rounds
The Homeland Security ammo buy is not the first time the government's bullets purchases have sparked concerns on the Internet. The same thing happened last year when the Social Security Administration posted a notice that it was buying 174,000 hollow point bullets.
Jonathan L. Lasher, the agency's assistant inspector general for external relations, said those bullets were for the Social Security inspector general's office, which has about 295 agents who investigate Social Security fraud and other crimes.
Jones the talk-show host did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Believe me sir.  The backwoods are okay with me as well.  I live 1 mile from one of our states nicest blue ribbon trout streams which is also one of the west's best brow trout fisheries.  I've had mule deer in the front yard.  We've had 12 elk hang out between my house and the neighbors house.  We recently discovered (1 year ago) a covey of chukar that spend parts of the spring and lat fall around the house.  We've got bald eagles, golden eagles, osprey, hawks and a couple of giant great horned owls that patrol the skies at night.

We've got bats to keep the mosquitos down.  We've got fox and coyotes.  We do have bears, porcupines, ermines, raccoons and skunks.

I prefer the backwoods.  The neighbors are better and everyone is just that much friendlier.  I'll keep the backwoods.

Same thing here brice except at our local Walmart they do have small shipments now and then but now they have a limit of 3 box's per customer specifically because of the shortage.

Just for the record I really dig the backwoods. I drove 30 miles one way from the backwoods to the city everyday and worked in the best and worst parts of KCKS & KCMO all day, then 30 miles home to the backwoods everyday for over 30yrs. I love walking out in my backyard and looking over the lake at an occasional bald eagle flying by or watching the white tail deer and/or wild turkey in the fields along with the howls of the coyote's at night. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with city life but I personally just dig the backwoods and would prefer it over city life anyday, but to each there own...

I can't find .223, 9mm, .44, .45, .40, .38 anywhere.  I have found some 12 and 20 gauge in #7 bird shot.  That's about it, and unfortunately bird season is a while down the road unless you want to count spring turkey... in which case you'd have to be in the backwoods in order to hunt spring turkeys.

el, I guess I am a backwoods militia type cat myself cause like you I'm sitting pretty good as well. It still concerns me because of like brice said most stores are out or extremely limited on ammo.

desrt not trying to be disrespectful, just for the conversation I admit I am ignorant on not having a clue as to what our military uses per year or where they get there ammo but I just assumed they didn't go to walmart, bass pro, cabelas, gun shows, or there ammo suppliers. Hell I guess I'm just a bit ignorant anyway but on this I just assumed our government had there own ammunition's plants/supplies separate from the average consumer. Also I do remember this happening before when S.S. bought up a bunch of hollow points ammo. I do agree with brice however that there is indeed an ammo shortage right now as we speak because I have witnessed this myself at several outlets as have many of my backwoods friends.

I've got more ammo than I could ever shoot, in 2 lifetimes, and so do many, many people I know. " I guess this is the backwoods militia they keep showing us pictures of in the news.

I think he's right on time.  This is cyclical and does happen often.  "Gun grabs" and "ammo grabs" were and have been big in the past near Presidential elections too.

And there most certainly is an ammo shortage.  None of my online sources have ammo, none of the local shops have ammo.  If that isn't a shortage, I don't know what is.  You can't even buy reloading supplies.  Power is gone, bullets are all dried up and the price of once used brass is off the charts if you can find it.

Actually, you're a little late on this one. This story makes the rounds every time there's a new fiscal year, a looming 'fiscal cliff'', or whatever. If you track gov't. purchases of paperclips you'll find the same pattern. If people understood how many rounds are expended just re-certifying on full-auto every year, they'd be hollering that our gov't wasn't buying enough ammo.
I first heard this one last year, and guess what  --  no ammo shortage.

Ha, ha... I beat them to this, and so did A LOT of other people (that I know).

I've got more ammo than I could ever shoot, in 2 lifetimes, and so do many, many people I know.

Saw this coming MONTHS ago, as did my fellow gun-owner buddies.

I even have ammo that I don't own the gun for, just in case I get one at a future date (and run across an ammo-shortage).

Nice try anti-gun gov't types!!!
