The country/world is full of milestones and there are more to be attained. Don't get to attached to these milestones.... The womens 4X100 relay record stood for better than 30 years.... until yesterday. A new milestone.
Having lived in and around S.F. for a long time I knew about her. The one interview I saw her on years ago left me with the impression that she wasn't too bright.
Her reference here is clearly about women's achievements. She could have worded it better so she didn't sound like she was actually channeling the spirits of Susan B. Anthony et. al., but not most of us understand what she was getting at.
Obama is the first black president and Pelosi was the first woman speaker.
Like them or not, these are milestones.
Back to Nancy Pelosi.... I knew nothing about the lady until the Bush administration. I didn't really have much of an impression of her. I started forming an impression of her during President Obama's first 2 years. Nothing was getting done and she went about blaming everyone and everything else, like a typical politician.
She's nuttier than a bag of squirrel poop.
I read a book set in the 1920s and it was controversial to discuss birth control. The book talked about how women with money and means had access while the poor did not. The main character was a politician faced with the problem of not supporting something publicly ( birth control for the masses) because it would damage his career, but his own wife used.
" The rich get rich and the poor get pregnant, in the meantime, inbetween time, ain't we got fun."
Pregnancy wasn't even talked about, back then; it was a very private thing and in some areas, women didn't even go out in public, once they began to show.
You know, I can't even imagine that there was. Good point. "good girls" just didn't get pregnant out of wedlock in those days, at least as far as I know. Now, I do know that women did have home remedies to deal with an unwanted pregnancy, but I highly doubt there was actually any sort of movement or argument about this issue like there is today.
Back to the O.P
“Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were activists in the women’s rights movement during the mid to late 1800’s. The Susan B. Anthony List, which works for pro-life women’s leadership in government, uses her as a namesake. The organization claims Anthony and Stanton were strong pro-life supporters.”
I wasn’t aware of a Pro-Life or Pro-Choice movement in the mid to late 1800’s
Good answer EL..I'm very proud of you!
If the shoe fits, IE: if the word fits the situation.
Calm down my friend.
Oh damn! Here we go!..."Can't we all just get along"??????????
EL what the F are you talking about how the shoe fits?
I forgot about bellicose, thanks.
Guess I should get out my thesaurus more often.
I like vitriol but I very very rarely use it.
"Vitriolic" finds itself in my lexicon much more frequently.
Now, isn't this a more pleasant dialogue?
Mike
If the shoe fits...
And it most certainly did in this situation.
Another word I like, but don't get to use a lot, is VITRIOL.
I'm a student of the English language (although it may not seem like I am by the way I speak & spell), but I absolutely LOVE infrequently used, atypical words.
Bellicose/bellicosity have been added to my database.
It's just the noun form of bellicose but I agree that it is a good word. I don't use it a lot but It seemed like the right word to describe what I was thinking.
AWESOME word Mike... bellicosity. Had to look that one up!!! I'm going to use that one, for sure.
You are a piece of work, but the flowers and butterflies is more my style than tough hawkie's way.
Guilty as charged-lol
So you can't tell me what names I am calling people. Probably because I am not calling anyone on this fourm a name. Maybe I call a website, or politician a name but do you really care? Should that get you all fired up? No it shouldn't.
But wait Obama said, "you didn't build it" and he was speaking about roads and what not according to some, yet when i say she is crazy and a liberal is what a liberal is, directly refering to her then I am speaking about all liberals?
Well I guess you have a choice, if i was speaking about all liberals then Obama was speaking about small business in your eyes. Or if i was speaking about Nancy then Obama was speaking about roads and stuff in your eyes.
To quote Charlie Sheen, "WINNER"
I am not going to go back over every post where you've called names, directly or implied.
Don't you see how childish that is ??
The one in this post:
"She is crazy, but liberal is what a liberal is" implies that liberals are crazy.
If you said, 'she seems crazy in my opinion' then fine. You are entitled to your opinion. We all are.
But the implication was insulting to anyone who might consider themselves liberal or to anyone who believes in fair play and treating all, including those whose opinions differ from our own, with respect.
I, for one, have not seen you engage in "name calling" Vance.
What I have observed is a degree of bellicosity in many of your posts and that is why I have the impression that you are angry.
Of course, this is subjective and other people could very well come away with a totally different impression.
Mike
Well to find out this "name calling" thing your talking about I need to know what your talking about.
Hey Vance,
I have an idea too. How about you stop calling people names and I won't feel like I have to reprimand that naughty boy who didn't learn how to get along and be nice to people.
The bottom line is treat people as you would like to be treated.
rivll no it does not when people come in with an attitude.
Mike:Impression in my writing. Do I use !!!!!!!!! a lot? Do I CAPATALIZE words a lot? No. Well then your impression is wrong.
OH: No problems created until you started to try to bully me around. And what do you consider name calling? Me calling Pelosi crazy? Or calling a liberal?
Then don't complain to me if I write something you don't think is flowers and butterflies.
