Ryan on the War on Poverty

Completely out of touch. And he's the one the GOP picks to show their 'compassion'.

http://inplainsight.nbcnews.com/_news/2014/01/09/22245861-ryan-on-the-war-on-poverty-it-has-failed?lite

"Former Republican vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan on Thursday argued that the War on Poverty has “failed” in an interview with NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams......

Ryan argued that the solutions to poverty have less to do with the federal government and more to do with people getting involved in their local communities.......

He said “pre-K makes a difference,” but he did not endorse any specific solution – only to say that the government should “stop subsidizing programs that are failing.”

President Obama called for universal pre-K to be a national priority in his State of the Union last year. But there has since been no movement in Congress on expanding it........

Ryan, who has said social safety nets have “failed miserably,” has made it a point to go to impoverished areas over the past year to try and show Republicans in a more compassionate light.......

.....The Ryan budget would have substantially restructured Medicare; cut Medicaid, food stamps, and transportation infrastructure; reduce the top tax rate from 35 percent to 25 percent."

Child and family homelessness is an escalating crisis. Accurate data is difficult to obtain and validate due to the transitional and often “invisible” nature of the population.

• One in every 45 children in the U.S. is homeless each year (Source: America’s Youngest Outcasts: State Report Card on Child Homelessness, National Center on Family Homelessness)

• More than 1.6 million children in the U.S. are homeless each year (Source: America’s Youngest Outcasts: State Report Card on Child Homelessness, National Center on Family Homelessness)

• Family homelessness is the fastest-growing segment of the homeless population, accounting for 41 percent of the nation’s homeless population in 2009 (National Coalition for the Homelessness)

Food stamps is all that stops some people from starving.
The only solution in my mind is we start focusing on compassion.
Shame on Ryan and the Rand mentality he supports.

If you want people to stop being dependant on the system you need to cut programs. The food stamp program has grown to rates that are absurd and need to be reigned in some.
The growth in that one program shows a failure from Obama or misuse of the system.

"...An analysis from the liberal-leaning Center on Budget Policies and Priorities says that 62 percent of the spending cuts in the Ryan budget would come from low-income programs, while 37 percent of its tax benefits would go to those making more than $1 million per year."
