Scale of the Universe

This isn't a news article, let me say that up front, and there's probably another forum on MH where this sort of thing fits better, but you guys are the people I hang with, so here's as good a place as any:

http://primaxstudio.com/stuff/scale_of_universe/
*Slide the white block from the FAR right and slowly move it to the left*

We are so incredibly, utterly & completely insignificant when compared to the scale of the universe, that I find it comical that we continue to bicker, argue, fight, wage war, incite genocide, etc. over something as trivial as GOD and organized religion (no offense April... just trying to stir the pot a little and spark a friendly discussion;-).

I agree w/ AHP, teko and Ashelen.

Ashelen, I homeschool my kids.  I use a faith based curriculum.  I'm Catholic, but there are plenty of faith based curriculums that are non denominal.  Anyway, I love how my curriculum blends God and Science.  It is really cool so I really like what you said about that.

Other than that, I can't really add anything.  April and AHP always say it much better than I ever could :)

I know...that's why we get along so well ;-). I can't find the quote I'm thinking of. I'm pretty sure it's from "universe" though(go figure) so if I get the motivation I'll hunt for it....but...we can use Carl Sagan's quote for now!

Nah that must be a different quote...it's paraphrased from a quote I read that Einstein said but I'm too lazy to look it up at the moment. That's ok Josh and I watch documentaries like every single day just because we're THAT nerdy.

Lol...I feel like such a nerd for knowing that quote. Thanks to my nerdy hubby who watches Carl Sagan on Netflix to fall asleep sometimes, lol.

I think your quote may be from Carl Sagan...
"The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of star stuff."

sorry - as to your comment about God/war....it says that God gave us free will. for good or ill. therefore wars started "in the name of God" are less a reflection of God than they are a reflection of the emptiness or corruption in the individual hearts of humankind. but then...we ARe human!

I like to think that, rather than consider ourselves insignificant, we consider ourselves a small part of what makes the universe such a beautiful mystery. I believe Einstein is the one who said "our atoms are leftover from supernovae and gas clouds from the early stages of the universe's creation. if that is so, then are we not, in a way, the universe trying to understand itself?" (not word for word, but you get the idea)....that makes us pretty significant, I'd say!

and yes i am a Christian. A jesuit - so a scientific Christian. I believe there is NOTHING that says science and God can't exist harmoniously as a continuous and non-contradictory concept. I say that science is the laws by which God's will works; science explains the wonder of God's majesty. We don't understand it all, but then...we never will. that's the journey of being human!

April: I know that you are a very faithful person, and in a lot of your reply's to people's posts, you quote scripture and "talk the talk" of a biblically educated woman. I just didn't want you automatically thinking I was slamming you personally, is why I mentioned your name up front. No offense meant.

Now, to my comment re: me thinking that it's funny that humans wage wars in the name of God...

For us (humans) to think that what we do matters, in the grand scheme of things, is what I find amusing. We are so infinitesimally small when compared to the grand scale of the universe, that I just find it somewhat funny (comical) that we run around killing each other in the name of God, when there are bigger & better things to be doing with our time... like getting along and trying to figure out our place in the universe.

I have respect for faith, and although I'm not a faithful man myself, I don't slight others beliefs. If you want to believe in God, knock yourself out. I actually envy blind faith. I wish I could steadfastly, wholeheartedly, unequivocally believe in something intangible. Unfortunately, I've been dealt a hand that will not allow me to do so.

I'm one of those "have to see it to believe it" type of folks.

Maybe it's a question of perception? Man perceives himself to be at the top of the totem poll (universally), and therefore exercises & imposes his will upon his surroundings.

I just find it odd that we, being that we consider ourselves to be at the top of the food-chain in every aspect (spiritually, mentally, socially, etc), would continue on down through the ages, to exercise such a basal & negative thing as murder in the name of a being (God) that is supposed to stand for all that is good.

I find it strange that you only mentioned my name, by the way. I know there are plenty of other Christians on the forum, as we can see by AHP84's answer and Teko's.
I certainly don't like to fight, as anyone who knows me knows that, but yes, I will stand for God every time. He gave His all for me, how could I not? It's all about relationship. I hope some day you can understand that, el_em_en_oh.

God said, if you had the faith of a mustard seed, you could tell that mountain to move and it would do so. Now, let me ask you this.... How many people have you EVER come across that had that kind of a faith in God...... That verse alone tells me we are not insignificant. Yee Haw! Makes the hair on my arm stand on end just thinkin about it!

That's a pretty amazing scale, by the way! Very interesting!
But as for something like God being trivial, I don't understand and that's where you've lost me. Organized religion I can see as trivial, but not God--He is the creator of the universe. There is nothing about God that is trivial.
And as for people fighting, waging war, etc., we as human beings are a prone to do that because we are a creation of God that has cursed ourselves into sin. We can't help ourselves; we're going to commit acts of sin as we live the lives we're given. We can only have the hope of being free from that sin after we perish from our earthly lives on the condition that we've accepted the salvation God offers us through the sacrifice of his son Jesus.
I like what narla said, about us being the only ones who can decide what we, as individuals want to believe and have faith in.
If everything about our lives and our existance is insignificant compared to the scale of the universe, then what is significant? Are we not worthy of having life because we don't compare to the scale of the universe? If we're not worthy of life, then what is?
I live my life with the faith that we are created in God's image. Our lives, our existence, is meant to represent the Creator of the universe.

Boy are you opening a can of worms

It was really interesting to look at though'

Can I just make the comment that people say religion is blind faith in a God that you can't see.

Isn't believing what we are told by scientist the same blind faith, how many scientific beliefs have been changed over the years, isn't that contradictory.
The things in this website are things we cannot see, they are theories proposed by scientists,we choose whether or not we believe in these theories, they are things we can't touch or see but many people have the same blind faith in what we are told by scientists.

We are the only ones to decide what we want to put our belief in.

I'm interested to see what others have to say,

Please remember to be accepting of all beliefs

Okay, forgive me...but I've read and re-read the last paragraph you wrote and I just cannot figure out what exactly you're trying to say to get a discussion going. I feel like a putz for asking, but could you re-word it? ☺
