I know an entire family of "Indians" and they themselves refer to themselves as "Indians" if they are not talking about their tribe... (Navajo-Apache) I know a family of French Canadian Indians.... and guess what? That is how they refer to themselves as.....
Thats just it. My grandparents were Indian (thus I am part as well)...
People are all tripping over themselves to be treated "special". The majority of the Indians I know call themselves Indians....so its not everyone freaking out..its just those with the loudest mouths as usual.. the rest are busy living life.
I had a black woman tell me to refer to her as african american...what was so funny about it was she called me "white girl" and kept referring to "you white folk". lol I could care less what she called me.. my skin is technically not white...and hers is technically dark brown... black and white is close enough....gee people...if your touchy you will be touched
I know our first visitors to this wonderful continent thought they had arrived at India, thus, reffering to the native inhabitants as Indians. Well, it stuck. Now the original inhabitants are reffered to as Native Americans. (America..Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian explorer) So they are Native Italians?...What's in a name? I always thought that using Native American names was an honor toward our original inhabitants. They obviously were fearfully respected although considered adversaries to the American/ Canadian expansion on this continent. I love Native American names. It's part of American history...Where will it all end? Already the name 'rebels' has all but disappeared. What will we do about the names of our states, counties, and cities? Reference to Native Americans is everywhere!
We need a few more ways to be easily offended....
