I must mirror Margy's comment. I find the fact that 4 justices didn't recognize our Constitutional rights to be disturbing. Which right is next???
It's rather interesting that in the town of Kennasaw, Georgia, since 1982, every adult is required to own a firearm with ammunition, either a pistol or a rifle.
The "shall issue" (for a concealed carry license for a pistol) statutes in the United States are actually rather recent, and most date from 1980. Before that time many police departments demanded justification for someone to have such a permit (such as carrying money to the bank, and then the permit was restrictive as to only cover that period). There was a great deal of arbitrariness in the provision of permits. Under mandatory "shall issue" the citizen does not require to justify his desire to be "heeled" and carry iron to the police. Many states have "reciprocity", and will honor a pistol permit from another jurisdiction.
Florida was one of the first states to adopt such laws and they have been very successful, with few problems.
Rifles and shotguns, and ammunition, in almost every place in the United States do not require a permit to purchase or possess.
In thirty-eight states the police MUST issue a permit to any adult over the age of twenty-one without a criminal record to carry concealed and loaded as many pistols as he/she see fit at any time of night or day without need for explanation. There are certain restrictions on locations, such as schools. Other states have various restrictions.
In other states (Vermont) no permit whatsoever is required as long as said pistol is carried openly.
I have a question on this. I know you have the right in the US to keep weapons in your home. Are you allowed to carry them on your person, concealed? Or does it depend on the state? I still find this ironic when I read about it. I am all for gun control, but the laws I can find on your gun ownership are exactly what I refer to as gun control. Basically that there is some background checks, etc. Funny...
Was the gun control that was being argued for disarming people in general? I am still confused and would be grateful if someone could explain to me. For no reason except I am interested.....Thanks.
Speaking as a Texan, any attempt to disarm the lawful and responsible owners of firearms, will cause a lot of trouble. We Texans are loath to surrender our guns AND our rights without a fight.
My concern is that 4 didnt want the 2nd amendment ....it only passed by one ..yes hurray for the moment, I expect Kagan ,if she gets in ,wont vote for it ....
Hooray for the Constitution!!! For a more detailed account of the Supreme Court decision please see: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/06/28/AR2010062802134_2.html?hpid=topnews&sub=AR&sid=ST2010062802981
