Yes some unions can be manipulative or become corrupt. In that I don't know if I would fire all the teachers but rather take administrative control over the union as their demands are unreasonable.

If I read the story correctly, it was the union’s rejection of the $30 extra an hour offer and wanted $90 an hour is what forced the school board to fire them.

Yes that's a complex one. My mother was a teacher in a junior high school and she did say that students performed better in classes where English was taught as the first language but that would involve changing overall regulations of the education system but it might be worthwhile.

Where I live teachers are part of a union so that would not happen. They can be fired of course but there would have to be a specific action that they took that would prove that could not perform their job or had violated regulations.

“Twenty-five percent of students receive English as a second language instruction.”

My support was for the teachers until I read this part.

“Teachers rejected the improvement plan because it only offered them an extra $30 per hour for the extra work required by the plan, according to the Providence Journal. The teachers had requested $90 per hour. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated that secondary school teachers in Rhode Island earn upward of $60,000, higher than the country's average salary of about $50,000 for teachers.”

Ewww tuff one. My first reaction was good for them. Get rid of crappy teachers, but then I'm thinking we don't pay our teachers enough for such an important job. I haven't heard the whole story yet, but from what I've heard so far, the teachers were not willing to put in the extra time needed.  There's always two sides to these stories and I don't know enough yet to say yeah or nay.
