PC going wild

Some Native Hawaiians disapprove of the name of a movie filmed and set in Hawaii, saying that titling it "Aloha" is a disrespectful misappropriation of culture and simplifies a word that's rich with meaning.

The Cameron Crowe film starring Bradley Cooper, Rachel McAdams and Emma Stone, opens Friday, with a screening in Honolulu three days before. The concerns are based largely on a trailer that depicts a military-themed love-story that appears devoid of a genuine connection to Hawaiian culture.

Sony Pictures did not comment on the concerns, pointing The Associated Press to an online behind-the-scenes piece that shows Stone's character saying, "this place has a lot of mana," using a Hawaiian word that can mean power. There are shots of hula and interviews with Dennis "Bumpy" Kanahele, a Native Hawaiian sovereignty activist who appears in the movie.

"If you have a romantic comedy about the military in Hawaii ... but a title that says 'Aloha,' I can only guess that they'll bastardize the word," said Walter Ritte, a Native Hawaiian activist on the island of Molokai. "They're taking our sacred word ... and they're going to make a lot of money off of it."

Hey guys I'm not supporting their view, I was simply trying to explain it from my limited experience.

I'm against censorship in general and think people do need to grow up and realize that fiction is simply that~ fiction.

Yes, they should get over it and maybe think that sharing aloha is a good thing !

I'm offended by the thought that something I think may be used in a manner other than its intended manner.  To think that someone could take the purest of my thoughts and use them in a negative fashion is a little more than I can stand.  I need to sue someone.

Actually, years ago I invented 'sour cream in a squeeze bottle".  I'd say that you could ask my mom for proof, but she took that secret with her when she left this life.  Just yesterday, I saw sour cream in one of those squeeze butter/margarine bottles.  That was not my intent.  My intent was smaller tubes only slightly larger than a tooth paste tube and it would come with different applicator tips.  I think the company was 'Cream o Weber'.  I'll be contacting an attorney, not for a copy right infringement.  For offending me.... I am deeply offended.

1. It is not connected to the military
2. It is a movie
3. It's a WORD

But in the end really, who cares what they think.

Having lived in Hawaii I can understand the locals not liking the word aloha being used for anything connected to the military.

Aloha in Hawaii is used as a kind of loving welcoming, to have aloha is the opposite of anything having to do with wars.

After years of being welcoming to outsiders Hawaiians are experiencing a kind of backlash,  logical or not.

Hollywood steps all over cultures of all kinds and people should remember that movies are fictitious fantasies not reality.
