I don't know a thing about nuclear power, so I won't even pretend to.... but I have what I believe is a common sense question regarding this article.... where in the hell is the routine maintenance on these sites?  How do things get this far out of shape in the first place?

I don't know.  If things at these sites are in this amount of disrepair, what in the hell is going on at these sites?  Personally, I'd think that nothing goes out of repair around a nuclear site....ever!  The risk is too large.

I don’t very much about Nuclear Power Plants but you got my wondering because we have 2 near by and both are built near the Mississippi River. This is what I found.

“For every three units of energy produced by the reactor core of a U.S. nuclear power plants, two units are discharged to the environment as waste heat. Nuclear plants are built on the shores of lakes, rivers, and oceans because these bodies provide the large quantities of cooling water needed to handle the waste heat discharge”

I live about one hour from a nuclear power plant is along the beach,so was the one I lived near in Florida..I have often wondered why near an ocean, like Fukushima it could easily wash into the oceans should there be a meltdown .Fukushima is really extremely unstable apparently likened to the China Syndrome ,its not easy to get info about the levels of radiation here in CA ..

Once upon a time I lived across the Arkansas River from a nuclear power plant at Dardanelle, AR (our adversaries know where they're at). The locals, as far as I could tell, had no say in anything  to do with the plant. Some lifelong residents were employed there but, only in lower paying, non professional positions. The river valley is surrounded by the Ozark & Ouachita mts making the geography beautiful. But, it is unstable with underground springs, fault lines, etc.

Fix it? This should have been common sense. Go figure! But in a time when smaller government is being screamed for and all the cuts going on, unless the townspeople all get together to do it themselves, Im not very optomistic. Right now we have to worry about getting thru hurricane season and things like the fires out in Texas and the drought. When that earthquake hit, 2 sites shut down in Va. One on its own and the other just in case and until both were checked for damage. My mother always said that We dont have to worry about being taken over cause we are so smart, we will destroy ourselves. Appears she was right on the money.

AS long as we live by the 2 party system, there will always be opposition regardless of who holds the office of the President of the United States.

OMG....Me either!....Ok so is the government going to fix it? Oh I forgot. If the President tries, he'll get opposition on where the money is going to come from and it'll get SQUASHED in the house. So maybe these reactors will just stay "in need of better safety" and we can hope and pray that nothing makes them explode. Forget the people that are in Arms way.........

So there are 27 nuclear reactors in need of better safety. I had no idea we had that many in our country.
