The states that are dying for healthcare coverage

http://bottomline.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/07/01/12419471-the-states-that-are-dying-for-healthcare-coverage?lite

"The lack of medical coverage in America is a serious problem as approximately 50 million people were uninsured all through 2010. But the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday ruled the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, was constitutional. The legislation, once implemented in its entirety, is expected to cover 30 million Americans currently lacking coverage.

The lack of medical insurance has had grave consequences for individuals and the nation. In 2010 alone, 26,100 people died because they had no health insurance — that amounts to 502 preventable deaths a week.....

1. Mississippi
• Excess deaths from a lack of insurance (per 100,000): 15.82
• Percent of population uninsured: 18.2 percent (ninth highest)
• Percent living below the poverty line: 22.4 percent (tied for the highest)
• Life expectancy at birth: 74.81 years (The lowest)

2. Louisiana
• Excess deaths from a lack of insurance (per 100,000): 14.94
• Percent of population uninsured: 17.8 percent (10th highest)
• Percent living below the poverty line: 18.7 percent (sixth highest)
• Life expectancy at birth: 75.39 years (fourth lowest

3. Arkansas
• Excess deaths from a lack of insurance (per 100,000): 13.49
• Percent of population uninsured: 17.5 percent (tied for 12th highest)
• Percent living below the poverty line: 18.8 percent (fifth highest)
• Life expectancy at birth: 76.09 years (sixth lowest)

4. South Carolina
• Excess deaths from a lack of insurance (per 100,000): 13.48
• Percent of population uninsured: 17.5 percent (tied for 12th highest)
• Percent living below the poverty line: 18.2 percent (seventh highest)
• Life expectancy at birth: 76.57 years (ninth lowest)

5. New Mexico
• Excess deaths from a lack of insurance (per 100,000): 12.15
• Percent of population uninsured: 19.6 percent (sixth highest)
• Percent living below the poverty line: 20.4 percent (tied for the highest)
• Life expectancy at birth: 78.21 years (20th lowest)

Those programs will be there and wil be available as long as the right doesn't get their way and scrap them...

"That's why I basically live like a pauper now... because I save every penny that I can possibly squirrel away."

"If you're relying on Social-Security to retire on, you better thing again sister. There's not going to be any money left by the time we get there.

Don't fool yourself... none of those programs will be available to either of when we retire.

Oh, they EXIST in form, yes. But there won't be any money left in them.

I read someplace yesterday that Social-Security ran an $83B last year (and it's increasing yearly).

More money is going out than is coming in, because people are living longer due to medical advances, healthier living, etc.

That's why I basically live like a pauper now... because I save every penny that I can possibly squirrel away.

If you're relying on Social-Security to retire on, you better thing again sister. There's not going to be any money left by the time we get there.

And THAT'S why the $$$ I save is being saved in such a way that the Democrats can't get their grubby little paws on it. My money/savings are hidden, and there's no way I'm letting anyone get their hands on it.

And just because I'm a Republican, doesn't mean that I have bottomless pockets that the Democrats can continue to pick whenever there's a financial shortfall because they're spending too much money on social programs...

"And I don't think she would have liked you either. The minute you showed up asking her to give her money, because you thought she didn't pay enough in taxes, she would have booted you out the door"

Too bad for her......I don't know what you're insinuating but I've NEVER asked anyone (government included) for anythng, My husband and I work VERY hard for what we have. We EARNED EVERY PENNY that we have saved. I went to college, payed over $50,000.00 back in studenet loans (NEVER received a free grant cus why? I earned too much money) We own our own house and own 2 cars. So please before you decide to be a JERK think twice....Just because I'm a democrat doesn't mean I'm sitting on welfare looking for the next man/woman to pay my way along...

I wouldn't be dead without it, but I'd damn sure be more in debt without it.

Regarding insurance...

I know that personally, if I didn't have healthcare insurance, I'd be dead right about now.

Fortunately for me, I have a decent job that provides excellent healthcare coverage.

If not for my employer, I'd be adding to the above statistics (in Texas).

Regarding insurance..... One of my charges at work had his medical insurance and never took advantage of it.  He was always sick with a cold, the flu, pneumonia.... would not go to the doctor.

I think part of it was the fact that he took really poor care of himself to begin with and didn't want a lecture.....

Ohhhhhh... she would have liked you just fine.

In her old age, she let ignorance roll off her, like water off a ducks back;-)

In all seriousness, she wrote 2 of my cousins out of her will, because they were Democrats, and in her words: They've already received their inheritance from me, in the form of taxes, that they've been stealing from me for the last 60 years. Let them get their handouts from the government, because they're not getting any more of my money (or something along those lines).

She was a hard, old, crotchety, Right-wing, Conservative, and I love her dearly.

She EARNED her money and never looked for a handout from anyone.

God rest her soul.

You wouldn't have liked her.

She was a Republican, and she had a lot of money.

My grandmother smoked AND drank, until the day she died, and she lived a lot longer than the majority of the folks here in the CE Forum are going to live.

Her b'day was on June 19th. She would have been 109. She died in 2003, at the tender age of 101.

She smoked 5 cigarettes a day, drank a Guinness for lunch, and one with dinner, and drank a glass of Harveys Bristol Cream, every day before bed.

If I live to be HALF her age, I'll be happy.

I know a man 85 that smokes like a train. So, the dangers of smoking and poor diet must be over rated.

Let me try again. I live here; I know how we live and how we eat. The article clearly states,  “much of this certainly can be attributed to poor health choices — the state has a higher number of smokers and its residents eat comparatively little fruit or vegetables” it also states “the inability of many residents to receive proper care due to lack of insurance is also a contributing factor". There is no denying lack of insurance is a contributing factor but until we change our lifestyle (aint gonna happen) all the insurance in the world is not going to change anything. I watched my brother in law wash down his Cholesterol and Blood Pressure meds with a Bud Light then later eat 2 bowels of Crawfish Etoufffee. That’s just they way we are. We have the best food in the world and we love to eat it. I didn’t start taking care of my self until 5 years ago. The only Vegetables I cared for was Onions, Celery, and Bell Peppers and they were sautéed for a Gumbo or Jambalaya.

Health care is not the line in the sand.  It is the topic of this discussion....  This is government that were talking about.... there are plenty of lines in the sand if one really has to find one.

"To me it makes sense to keep people on their feet where they can be a productive part of the workforce.
We have a gov't. decreed minimum wage, we have a gov't. mandate to carry car insurance. The gov't. - state and federal - tells us to do a lot of things for our own good and the good of others. Why has healthcare become the line in the sand?"

Nicely put!

Smoking, not exercising, and not eating your veggies are personal choices and something a person can control even if they're making minimum wage. If you're overweight because you're insulin resistant, though, you need to pay that $80-$120 that uninsured people pay for  a doctor's visit, you need to get blood work done (another couple hundred dollars), and then you need to take a cheap pill to keep your blood sugar under control. If you never take that first step because you've got to choose between feeding your kids and the doctor's visit, you end up in a charity hospital with your feet amputated. To me it makes sense to keep people on their feet where they can be a productive part of the workforce.

"Louisiana has one of the lowest life expectancies at birth in the U.S. at 75.4 years. Though much of this certainly can be attributed to poor health choices — the state has a higher number of smokers and its residents eat comparatively little fruit or vegetables — the inability of many residents to receive proper care due to lack of insurance is also a contributing factor".
??? The title of the post seems to be a little deceiving
