Top Dems, Obama campaign seek to tie Romney to GOP anti-abortion stance

(CNN) – Top Democrats on Tuesday pounced on news that Republicans adopted as part of their party platform a call for a constitutional ban on abortion and sought to tie the controversial policy plank to Mitt Romney’s campaign.

In a conference call with reporters, Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz asserted that the measure, which does not provide an exception for pregnancies that result from rape and incest, “was written at the direction of the Romney campaign.”

“This is just another example of a Republican Party led by Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan whose policies on women’s health are dangerously wrong,” Wasserman Schultz said.

An Obama campaign official also told CNN that Obama’s reelection effort will highlight the development in the coming days, seeing it as a clear “contrast point” with the Romney-Ryan ticket.

“That is something that is important to a number of women and the people in their lives,” the campaign official said.

The chairman of the platform committee that approved the language is Gov. Bob McDonnell of Virginia, a top Romney surrogate. But the presumptive Republican nominee has pledged that he favors a rape and incest exception to laws prohibiting abortions.

His running mate, Paul Ryan, has opposed exceptions for rape though the Wisconsin congressman now says he defers to Romney's position.

The vote among the GOP's official platform committee to endorse the so-called "human life amendment" took place earlier Tuesday in Tampa where Romney will be officially nominated next week.

While the policy plank is similar to that in previous Republican Party platforms, the Tampa vote is magnified given the this week’s controversy over Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin’s comments regarding rape and pregnancy that have Republicans calling for him to step aside.

“It’s time for Mitt Romney to stand up for women, he should unequivocally denounce the Human Life Amendment in the Republican platform,” said Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America.

Keenan joined Wasserman Schultz on the media call.

Wait... are you saying that the first people to bing Akin's comment to the forefront of the news, was the Republicans?

I posted the article on HERE, and it was the Democratic party and the BO-campaign that brought it up.

Where do I get my facts? The same place you get yours, I dare say.

CNN, Reuters, MSNBC, BBC. Some other places of course, but mostly there.

Teko, the Democratic party didn't necessarily BREAK the story, but the first people to make an issue out of it, were the Democrat Obama campaign.

I'm just going by what I read of course.

Seriously, why on earth would the Republicans break the story and try to keep it in the news???

WHO made this an issue?

Akin is an idiot, and before he made his IDIOTIC statement(s), we had other stuff to talk about.

The flames of the issue were fanned and turned into an inferno by the Left, to detract from the REAL issues.

As I said, it's an important issue, no doubt. But PLEASE... let's talk about the economy, etc.

That is probably because you dont have a vagina the repubublicans are trying to probe.

They made this an issue, it affects women and the men who love them. It IS a big issue. Rowe vs Wade was made legal many years ago and as we speak the pubs are devising ways of doing away with womens rights. So to you I guess its not a REAL issue. Obviously it is to women.

Compared with the economy, unemployment, immigration, taxes & healthcare, I'm sorry to say, abortion issues take a back seat.

This country has a lot bigger fish to fry, than arguing about who's for and who's against abortion.

Does no one else see that this issue is being made a lot bigger than necessary (at this phase in the election), to detract us from the REAL issues?

I'm not saying it's not an important topic, because it IS. Just NOT RIGHT NOW.

I agree, it's a divisive issue. Just as gay rights are.
But you know what ? As a mother of a daughter and granddaughter, I am willing to vote based on keeping abortion safe and legal.

Yes, yes... let's talk more about abortion!

That'll detract from the REAL issues of the country.

To hell with the economy!
To hell with the unemployment rate!
To hell with the deficit!
To hell with immigration reform!
To hell with tax reform!

LETS TALK ABOUT ABORTION!!!
