Obama: ‘As if it was my decision’ to withdraw troops from Iraq

In a Saturday morning address, before departing on a two-week vacation, President Barack Obama gave an update on the progress of air strikes against Islamic militants in Iraq and the dropping of supplies to the starving Yazidi people.

He also took questions from reporters, and one response in particular drew attention. The president was asked whether he regretted withdrawing troops from the country given how swiftly the Islamic State group, alternately called ISIS and ISIL, has taken parts of the country.

Obama speaks to reporters on Saturday.
“What I just find interesting is the degree to which this issue keeps on coming up, as if this was my decision,” Obama said. “Under the previous administration, we had turned over the country to a sovereign, democratically elected Iraqi government. In order for us to maintain troops in Iraq, we needed the invitation of the Iraqi government, and we needed assurances that our personnel would be immune from prosecution if, for example, they were protecting themselves and ended up getting in a firefight with Iraqis, that they wouldn’t be hauled before an Iraqi judicial system.”

That “as if this was my decision” — representing a possible swipe at the Bush administration — was a jaw-dropping response to the admittedly small group of political reporters and conservative activists on Twitter who were following the address. While it’s certainly the case that the Iraqi government didn’t make it easy to sign a so-called status-of-forces agreement to keep U.S. troops there, Obama actively sought to withdraw troops — and, more to the point, he campaigned on it.

I was responding to this comment from you, "took down the only guy who had control over the idiots". If control you meant killing his own by the thousands if not millions and using WMD's on his own people then yes he had control of them. Hell his 1 son killed several soccer players for not winning certain matches years ago.

Are we talking about Saddam or are we talking about the US invading the region under the pretense of WMDs? And how do you know for sure what the media was telling us about Saddam was real as well? How do you know that the media is not setting us up to get consent to do it all again? How do you know who to believe? The propaganda and rhetoric are all set up to make us think a certain way, so how do you know anything other than what you choose to believe? How do you know anything of what we hear is anything other than perception and taking advantage of our emotion after 9/11?

So you can look past the thousands if not millions Saddam had killed? You can look past the WMD's that he used?

“If I was of age, I'd be first in line to sign up for deployment. Health issues & age prohibit me from doing so”

We should be the 1st ones they send there. The ACA needs all the help it can get!

no el.

Actually, if you remember right, I said I voted for Bush and like the rest of the US got right behind the effort based on what we were being told. Hindsight is always 20/20 isnt it? But as the truth emerged and we realized we had been hoodwinked, it made me angry. 250,000 dead Iraqi people and over 7500 of our own for no good reason to be proud of supporting something so wrong. But like I said before, we destablized the area, took down the only guy who had control over the idiots and we now have to take responsibility for contributing to what is happening to those people now.

I dont think Iraq cares how old you are, if you really want to help em.
And it looks like we may have to before its all said and done. I do understand we are now arming the Kurds, which is a good thing I think. But I think it will take more.

And dont cry the bipartisan river with me. We both know better.

Teko-
So you didn't support the effort to go there when it was Bush's decision, but now that Obama is making the decision, it's okay with you?

Don't get me wrong, I completely support the Obama administration's decision to go back in. I'm of the opinion that we never should have left in the first place.

But at least I'm consistent. I support action in Iraq, be it initiated by the Right OR the Left.

If I was of age, I'd be first in line to sign up for deployment. Health issues & age prohibit me from doing so (as I dare say is the case with most of the members here at CE), but I support our troops, military & action in every way I possibly can, stateside.

Iraq wanted us out, period..........We got out, period. I still think it was a good decision regardless of who ya want to blame for it. We should have never been there to begin with (regardless of who ya want to blame for it).

I guess it would make more sense to let 40 thousand people be slaughtered on a mountain rather than face criticism for intervening, (when we created the whole damn thing to begin with?).....Lots and Lots of people to point fingers at for all the political ****** that are doing it instead of uniting for a common cause.

I would say that those who still cry for boots on the ground over there, be the first to put their own boots on the ground. Im still hoping we dont go back but support the effort that is in process now.
