I missed that. Now I am really confused. How can The School take disciplinary action for something that didn’t happen on school property of a school function? This is Bizarre

Why is the School allowing students to have access to Facebook? I thought they went to school to learn. Facebook can wait until they get home. Kids will be Kids so, how can the 13 Y.O. be held totally accountable? The school should revaluate what they are allowing. Hell, we couldn’t chew Gum and if there was any contact with the outside world it went through the Principle’s office. I’m not justifying what this kid did; I’m just saying the school should accept part of the blame.

Yeppers I surely did, but mostly spanking was reserved for when they tortured animals and stole the teachers purse with her drivers license in it on the last day of school. Or for climbing the telephone pole and using it to tap into the phone lines and order all kinds of stuff for the neighbors. LOL, I had 6, so it was a matter of survival.

narla- good for you! Good parenting!
adgal-I agree with you on several things
teko- you spanked your kids? surely you must not have loved them, and by spanking them no doubt all of them are abusive and violent right? (I am being sarcastic). I think it was sinbad who years ago said he stayed out of crime cause his dad beat his butt and then he said something about he would like to be a fly on the wall when a gangster is told they are in time out. lol

Well when ya got the parents going around dissing the highest office in the land and who is sitting in that position, CAN we really hold a 13 year old for wishing this terrorist would kill her teacher? I mean as bad as it sounds she is 13 and while punnishment should be handed down, suspension might be a little over the top. I dont think there are enuff details in this story to make an informed decision one way or the other. I wonder if she even knew who bin laden was, I mean does it really sink in at that age? The article is just not forthcoming enuff. PERSONALLY, if she had been mine she would have gotten a spankin and the principal would be takin a step back cause that is my authority not his. Secondly, if the child of 13 were mine, she would know who bin laden was and she would definately understand how wrong it is and unacceptable to wish her teacher harm by any means. But then, that was then and this is now. NOW, they would put me in jail for child abuse or hurting their pride. So yeah, maybe it was the job of the principal after all?

I fully agree that issues like this should be dealt with by parents.  I think so many of the issues that arise today should be dealt with by parents...disciplinary issues, sex education, boundaries and rules, health issues, what they eat, etc.

Problem is so many parents these days just don't seem that interested in parenting.  They like the idea of having kids, but don't want to deal with any of the issues that arise.  Can't be bothered or too many problems of their own?  So I do think the school system often finds itself in a pretty tough spot...almost being forced into acting like parents at times.  I know so many very frustrated teachers who are having to do things that should absolutely be parental responsibility.

So I don't think this child should have been suspended and agree that is overstepping a boundary. But I do think it's a very different world out there now and there are just way to many absentee parents...there physically, but not at all involved in their kids lives. Not saying that was the case here, obviously I have no idea.  Just saying that in general I think teachers are in a bit of a tough position these days.

I caught my daughter truanting from school when she was 15,I put her in my car took her to the principal at the school and made her tell him where she was and what she was doing all day.
Because of this the principal let me mete out the discipline,as he said I would be more effective than he would.
Parents need to be pro-active in their childs welfare and the schools need to work with the parents.

I do understand that some parents couldn't be bothered but at least give the parents a go.

I think the school crossed the line too. There are parents that would never deal with their bad kids behavior, but the school should have taken into consideration the students typical behavior and called the parents. Big difference between a good kid saying this in frustration and a kid that everyone knows is a walking time bomb.

Does the 1st-Amendment apply to 13-year olds? Seriously, I don't know. Does anyone?

If one of my boys (one of the 60 boys in my Boy Scout Troop) said something like that out loud (that he wished OBL would kill one of the adult-leaders in the troop), we'd be sure and tell his parents, but there wouldn't be a suspension involved.

If one of the posted it on FB and we became aware of it, same thing... we'd confront the parents and ask them to deal with it.

I don't think the school was within their rights to suspend the child from school, because of something that happened at home. 1984 anyone?

"Jeez... sure wish my boss would have been killed by OBL". Ergo, should Carl (LMNO) be fired or suspended from his job, because he put that in writing?

Not sure where you draw the line, but I think the school for sure crossed it.
