I think you're right except what 'they want' is related to who lines their pockets.
If we got the money out of politics, then the politicians might remember they are supposed to work for us, not the corporate interests who pay for their campaigns.
Not sure if this relates, but I've always like the idea of getting, "none of the above' on the ballot.
Ok, I have a question on this topic. Not arguing your point at all as I think it's a good one, just wondering....isn't the whole idea of electing members of congress that they are supposed (note, I say supposed) to represent what the majority of their constituents want? Therefor avoiding the need to have a vote on many issues? It seems to me the primary issue (and its exactly the same problem where I live) is that somehow this has evolved to what the politicians themselves want. The situation could be rectified is they actually talked to the people they are supposed to represent as opposed to only listening to those whose opinions are in line with their own. No?
That is exactly what I was thinking, and desrt... that is exactly what they are afraid of. And when it comes down to it, I don't care about recounts... lets just not get caught stuffing ballot boxes. Every living American the age of 18 and above gets one vote....
My guess is that would take the control out of the politicians hands.

There was actually an interesting article on this the other day which seems to have disappeared - can't find it even punching 'popular vote' , 'electoral college' , and so forth into the search engine. The gist of the article was that currently seated politicians (specifically Republicans) are deathly afraid of this movement and the best reasoning they can come up with (at least for the presidential election) is that the possibility of numerous recounts might prevent us from having a president sworn in by Jan. 20th.
