I finally found out the nephew is fine, and I called and talked to the kids in Ohio, Tenn, because I saw where the storms are heading up thru the midwest again. I heard there were what 112 dead now? We need to pray for these folks and open our wallets as well, they are sure gonna need it....

Sorry... to SUCH high wind standards, not 'suck' high wind standards (no pun intended?)

Yeah... you'd think that it'd be "industry standard" or at least some sort of home-insurance requirement to have a reinforced shelter of some description, built into your home.

Even 60 miles away from the coast, the builder that built our house was held to some pretty stringent building codes (wind-storm codes, hurricane-wind codes, etc). Our house, apparently, is rated to withstand a Category-3 hurricane, with sustained Cat-3 winds, for 15 hours+ (that's what the code says anyway). It's a REQUIREMENT for the builders to build houses in our area (within a certain distance from the coast) to suck high wind standards.

And being that we're as close to the coast as we are, the insurance company requires us to carry Wind-Insurance, Hurricane-Insurance, AND Flood-Insurance. Further down the road, and we could ditch the Wind-Storm Insurance, but there you go. Location, location, location.

So why on earth don't insurance companies in "Tornado Alley" REQUIRE builders to install hardened, reinforced, concrete, cinder-block, shelters in all homes? Honestly, it wouldn't cost THAT much, and I'd guess that whatever the additional cost is, people would pay it if it'd save the lives of themselves and their children and neighbors.

Just thinking out loud.

Anyone know how much a shelter like that would add to the cost of a home? Of course, if you have to build one inside an EXISTING home, it'll be more expensive that building around one from scratch. But them again, isn't it as easy as digging a hole in the ground with a door???

Praying for all those that have been affected by these savage storms.

Weather comes in cycles, this is a La Nina cycle I think, opposite of El Nino. It's what was blamed for our floods in Queensland earlier in the year.

They are saying on the news here that the last time there was a tornado season like this it was just before hurricane Katrina hit,I hope the US is prepared.

Prayers with everyone

I was curious why they dont have their homes built with strom shelters. When I lived in Missouri I noticed a lot of homes were on slab. This did not make us feel very good when the sky turned green and the sirenes sounded.

This is a little off-topic, but the wife and I (now EX-wife) moved away from the Texas Gulf Coast for the specific reason of avoiding direct hits by hurricanes. We built a house 60 miles in-land so that we wouldn't have to deal with impact-winds and storm-surges caused by powerful hurricanes.

If I was in "Tornado Alley", I'd think about moving. I know hind-sight is 20/20, and it's easy to "Monday Morning Quarterback" these folks, but I'm just saying...

All the same, I feel bad for them none the less, and wish them all the best.

I have a brother in Mo. too, along with his family.
You asked why, and we will all have different answers, but I am wondering if it is God. I am not saying it is or isnt, because I am not God and I have no idea, but I am wondering. I cant help but think of the warnings from David Wilkerson.

As far as what is being done I just heard Obama ordered help out there NOW! His words. My question is what have we done to tick off Mother nature. I hear more storms today and they are still looking for the dead and the count is expected to rise. OMG! And we are worried about terrorists? I wonder if this is going on all across the globe like this or if we are singled out here in the states?

I have a nephew lives in MO. Hoping he is well.

You asked whats being done. I realize you meant government wise, but you know what I find disturbing? Everything is so (organized) that it takes FOREVER for anything to get done! The tornado was yesterday. People should have been sent out yesterday. Even the site online says for volunteers to come to a place and get instructions so they can organize what needs to be done. I dont know, in my own opinion I think people in the surrounding towns should load up their vehicles with water, tools, medical supplies and go find people in need of help. I know that is probably looked down on, maybe theres something I dont know about that makes that a bad idea, I personally would hope if it were me, that capable bodies showed up to help now, instead of waiting for all the paper work etc...
