$380.00 a minute?

My dentist started to drill a root canal, but within a minute - he said he had caused a worse crack then was already present. So he suggested a surgical extraction, while I was still numb. The surgigal extraction was $390. The minute that he started drilling (before the crack got worse-caused by the drilling) is being billed for $380.00!! The office personel said that is the billing for the "started" root canal, no matter how short of a time it took. $380.00 for a minute or less of drilling... how on earth can this be legal - that comes out to $22,800.00 per hour!! I told her this, but she insisted that was the amount. I asked to talk to the dentist - and after being on hold for 15 minutes, I hung up and called back. I got their voicemail! What recourse do I have here?? I plan on calling my dental insurance tomorrow, on my lunch break. Thanks for any suggestions or help you might have. Please address them to my e-mail address or on this community.

If he said that HE caused the crack to get worse, then he shouldn't charge you. Do you charge him when he keeps you waiting? Anyway, how does an experienced dentist do something like that? Sorry for being annoyed but I hate when I hear stuff like that. Drives me mad.

So you're saying that he extracted the tooth and you were billed $390.00 as well as an ADDITIONAL $380.00 for the first tiny bit of drilling in the beginning???  That is truly outrageous!   If this had been my dentist, I know he would have only charged for the extraction and that would be all.    I know it sounds ridiculous but your dentist is probably saying that he allotted you an hour of his time to do the first stage of the root canal treatment and that time was "wasted" (for want of a better word) because you ended up having an extraction instead.   I suppose it comes down to each individual dentist.   I truly sympathize with you though......I too think it's absolutely crazy what he's billed you.   I wish you all the best in not having to pay this bill.
