Abscess Tooth

I have been dealing with an abscess tooth for many years. I go to the dentist and they give me medicine and it will clear up. They have recommended that I go to an oral surgeon yet I continue to put it off. Today I experienced the taste and smell of the infection and can feel a little pain in me throat and am starting to worry. Is there anything that I can do to ensure that the infection doesn't spread until I get into the dentist or should I go to the emergency room?
