Bump in mouth under tongue/behind front teeth?

Hey all,

I have a question about a bump I discovered recently in my mouth while prodding around with my tongue. I've googled to no end but nothing seems to fit. It may be normal anatomy, but I just noticed it and have convinced myself I would have noticed it before now if it were, since I feel around that area of my mouth pretty often as a kind of nervous habit.

Here are some characteristics:

- 25 y/o male
- Bump is located about 1-1.5cm below the bottom of my lower, center front teeth (where the hard gums meet the kind of mushy, floor-of-mouth area, or, right around where the frenulum of the tongue attaches.)
- Feels about the size of a match head; like a roundish, firm node
- Firm, but fleshy (almost "cartiledgy" feeling), not bony
- Can't really "move" it back and forth with my tongue; seems fixed onto whatever the hard surface under there is considered to be (gums? jaw?)
- Can't see anything; can only feel it when pressing with the tongue on that area

I attached a picture for reference (not my mouth, just the area where my description is referring to). Right in that little "depression" looking area.

Any ideas of what this could be? I have no problem visiting the dentist for a check, but would rather avoid going in urgently just to be told it's normal, although even that would probably serve to relieve some anxiety.

Thanks for any help.

Thanks for your reply! The pic isn't me, just trying to show the hard-to-describe (for me, at least) area I'm referring to. I don't smoke, although I have dipped in the past which is probably part of the reason why I get anxious about mouth things. If anything ever were abnormal I'd want to be on top of it, but at the same timr don't want to overreact to every little thing.

It looks like normal anatomy to me.  Make sure you don't smoke as that is the most common cause of oral cancer.
