Dry Socket and Bone Fragments

I had a lower wisdom tooth extracted on 4/16/08. I developed Dry Socket even though I followed all the surgeons instructions. I went back in a week later and he packed the hole. I was told this would elevate some of the pain. It only made it worse. About a week later two large pieces of bone started  to erupt around my gums close to the jaw. I went back in to have it looked at again. He had his assistant pack the hole again and sent me on my way. The pain was so bad I went to a different surgeon for a second opinion. I was treated like I was the problem at both places. The second surgeon noticed the bone and cut it away. Over the next several weeks small pieces of bone were still coming out. This experience has been incredibly painful and upsetting.  Is this at all normal? I have other wisdom teeth that need to be extracted but I'm scared to death. It is starting to feel better thankfully but it took almost 7 weeks.
Thanks for any input.

Exposure of bone is rarely encountered after the procedure. However, exposure of bone is generally not associated with pain.

thanks for the input. However, the bone that was exposed wasn't inside the dry socket, it was erupting threw my gums around where the tooth was pulled and it hurt like hell. I was living on mashed potatoes. The second surgeon did acknowledge after he removed the pieces of bone that he could understand why I was in so much pain. He even showed me what he trimmed off.
For several weeks following this procedure I continued to have small pieces of bone coming through and bleeding. The pain was brutal. I am seeing my regular dentist soon just to make sure it healed alright. I never imagined such a long recovery time for a pulled tooth. I was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience.
