What is causing this?

For the past year and a half, I've had these symptoms and none of the dentists I've been to have looked into it when I told them about it. Do you know that sensation you get on your tongue when you rub your tongue in the groove in a chipped porcelain cup? That's what my lower front 6 teeth have felt like for the past year and a half. My gums are swollen, sore and irritated, and I have this sensation of having something stuck in between my teeth. I'm looking for another dentist, but any help on what could be causing these problems would be very appreciated. I've tried all sorts of things, different toothbrushes, toothpastes...nothing has made an ounce of difference.

Your dentist is supposed to know if you need to be referred to a periodontist.

I was just curious if my problem was purely periodontal, because of the way my teeth have been feeling. Could gum problems directly relate to how the teeth feel as well? I was also curious because I am due for a dental cleaning...

Should I first go to a dentist and get a recommendation to see a periodontist?

Thank you.
