Can I be depressed?

Since the age of 12 I have always ive always kind of felt unhappy. I've hated myself and even attempted suicide. My parents knew about it but never tried to get me any help. In my family if we feel sad then we are told to just get over it or just stop feeling sorry for ourselves. Well I'm 24 now and have 2 small children and live with my fiance. People tell me I look happy and around people I usually act happy but I still have a hate for myself and I want to be alone most of the time. I can never be around people for too long or I feel like I am going to have an anxiety attack or something. For the past few months I have been bursting out crying when no one is around for no reason I just start getting this overwhelming feeling and I start to think bad thoughts about myself. I dont know why I hate myself so much when I have everything that should make me happy. I've never tried to get help before because like i said before its not something my family has tought me to believe in but I want to get help for myself so I can be better for my children. Can going to see a professional really help?

yes!! it would be great if you got professional help. Being sad isn't something you should be okay with. I think you're definitively depressed,  getting therapy would be great, you will feel happier and you should love yourself. There isn't true happiness without loving yourself first.. I am sure you have a great fiance and two beautiful children.. good luck!!!

I do think I need some kind of therapy but it's hard for me to open up about the way I'm feeling. I haven't even opened up about this to my fiancé and it's really interfering with our relationship. Sometimes I can't even stand for him to hold me because I feel so depressed and want to be left alone. I'm worried about being put on medication because I've heard that sometimes it can worsen things. I woul like to know if meds actually help people...
