Mast cells over load, what's the talk about on this?

If one has allergies that cause mental depression, does one have depression, or is this just an allergy?
Is the depression consider cured if allergy medication help the issue?

Thanks nursegirl6572, I agree with this part, " I am much more on the side of a biological connection,” says Teodor T. Postolache, MD, associate professor of psychiatry and director of the mood and anxiety program at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. Postolache led a 2005 study that found that peaks of tree pollen levels correlated with increased levels of suicide in women.

He says allergic rhinitis is known to cause specialized cells in the nose to release cytokines, a kind of inflammatory protein. Animal and human studies alike suggest that cytokines can affect brain function, triggering sadness, malaise, poor concentration, and increased sleepiness."

I think if a study was done and they tested people with allergies( with signs of depression) with allergy pills, vs nose spray, the people reciving the nose spray would show more improvement.
That is very interesting about the "cytokines".

sexyklad...OP didn't say that.  She's asking if there is a correlation between the two.

zoe, interestingly enough, there have been studfies done about this.  While scientists cannot say for CERTAIN that allergies casuse depression, there is a pretty strong correlation for a lot of people!

Check this out:

Hope that helps.  Obviously, if this IS a possibility, the best thing to do is to try to manage the allergies as best as possible.  Pretty interesting!

No, it's not caused by the allergy medication. Nasal sprays help a ton and it's like being in a zombi state then when you use the spray's it feels like a ton of bricks has been lifted off of you. There is something called Mastocyosis and I am wondering if that would be the cause. There seems to be a family connection too.

That sounds senseible if it is caused by the allergies! Do you only feel depressed when allergies flare up, and then just fine any other time?
Maybe even the allergy meds you take can cause it
