Severe scalp itch after shower

nfm
My son, 16, has severe scalp itch following shower.  Dermatologist prescribed a shampoo and foam as needed, which worked for a while but gives him no relief at all anymore.  We have tried many shampoos, no shampoo, and nothing seems to make a difference.  It is getting worse again now that the weather is changing so I suspect drying does in fact have something to do with it but there must be something else going on here.  Just getting ready to make another dr. appt and hoped perhaps someone might have an experience to share.  He took a Benadryl this evening and it really helped.  Don't know why we never thought of it before.  So is that diagnostic; does that mean it may be an allergic reaction of some sort?  It's really severe, not just a little dandruff issue.
Thanks!

Hi!

I have the same problem as your son. Mine is from the HOT water. They think I have MS (Multiple Sclerosis) and this is a common problem for people with MS. It used to happen only when my hair was dirty (oily) but now it happens no matter what, as soon as I get out of the shower. Sometimes I lay in bed at night and dig the crap out of my scalp for a half an hour before falling asleep. I'm sure your son doesn't have MS since he's 16 but I sure feel your guys frustration. Good luck to you and your son!

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
Since your son had relied after taking antihistaminics and the itching is severe , so possibilities like atopic dermatitis which may be caused due to allergies needs to be ruled out. I suggest you to get a skin biopsy done from a dermatologist and get the diagnosis confirmed.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your dermatologist. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
