insane scalp itch

I have had this problem for years, and it keeps getting worse each year. My scalp itches to the point of insanity, and has little sore bumps all around. This started in the winter months, and would get better in the summer. Now it plagues me 9 out of 12 months a year. I buy the strongest medicated shampoo I can find at CVS, and wash my hair daily with it. I leave it on for the duration of my shower. Not only is it irritating, but also embarrasing. Is there anything I can do to stop this? Thanks!

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
Two possibilities are there for your symptoms.First of all, eczema can cause dryness of scalp and itching. Also dandruff can aggravate the dryness.
Second possibility is of a fungal infection causing tinea capitis. It is contagious and can spread direct contact with someone who has the condition, or if you touch contaminated items such as combs, hats, clothing, or similar surfaces. Diagnosis is by clinical examination of the scalp as well as a skin lesion biopsy with microscopic examination.Anti-fungal medications, taken by mouth, are used to treat the infection.

It is important to keep the area clean. A medicated shampoo, such as one containing selenium sulfide like selsen may also help. I suggest you to get it examined and the diagnosis confirmed from a dermatologist.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.

Thanks for answering. The problem I have is that my insurance does not cover a dermatologist, and also where I am from they are hard to find. They don't take new patients, or you have to wait 6 months. But thanks for the advice, and I will keep trying to see one. Jan
