Just too add to this discussion, I've been having this condition for a few years now and I always noticed that when I left the area I lived for vacation or something it would die down, so I thought it was allergy related. I found that taking Benadryl at night like this thread suggested helped a lot with flare ups. The only problem is I started taking Benadryl the same time I started applying Differin Gel to the area, so I'm not sure which one is the one working. This combo has caused the redness to almost disappear for the first time in years, and since I only started this routine a few days ago it might go away completely. I was worried Differin would irritate the area like every other lotion had, but now I apply a little before I go to bed, then put a thin layer of aquaphor over it. Seems to work.

Does anyone think that the rash is related to stress/anxiety at all? If so then possibly that is the reason that the rash is never fully cured? Has anyone else tried benadryl and of
and found it worked?
I have suffered the same thing on and off.. mainly around the corners of my nose. Burning red and little white spots that would flake off. Very irritating and uncomfortable. Sulphur masques really help, also not applying any moisturiser/oil to the area. Keeping it as dry as possible basically. No makeup. Also avoid acidic type foods, eat lots of vegetables especially garlic and double dose on probiotics.
I had a similar issue for about a year. Blistery, tiny, red bumps around the nostril. It started moving to the other side, and up the outsides of the nostril. No bumps at the mouth or eyes. It was slightly itchy and painful, but not like HSV. I have dealt with HSV in the form of cold sores my whole life, so I know the difference. The nose rash is red and goes from blisters to flaky. When if first showed up, it responded well to Nystatin cream, which caused me to suspect it was fungal. It flared up again while still using the Nystatin. My suspicions were confirmed when my PCP looked at the scraping under a microscope and saw a lot of fungal activity. He explained that it probably became resistant to the Nystatin. I was prescribed a two week dose of an oral antifungal (Diflucan), and a topical antifungal. The rash seemed to improve for a couple days, but again flared up and spread. I wore makeup throughout this time. I cannot stand to go to work or anywhere else without makeup on to cover this thing.
Upon researching extensively, I realized that people have suggestions for how to manage the rash, but no one has an answer or cure. It seems that everyone had tried something, and some folks have tried everything. I want to share what is working for me.
I am an RN, and I don’t have a diagnosis for myself, but if I had guess I would say it is probably Perioral Dermatitis. I haven’t seen a dermatologist…I actually had an appointment that I ended up cancelling. I can tell you something that has worked for me.
TEA TREE OIL. If you google TEA TREE OIL, you will find that it contains many healing properties. One of these is anti-fungal. I have learned what works for my rash, and I will explain self-treatment.
At the beginning, when my rash was at its very worst, I would have a couple new blisters per week. It was spreading...and fast. It was moving down toward my lip, out to the cheek side, and up into my nostril. Then it showed up on the other side and started moving bilaterally up toward my eyes. SCARY. I was panicking, and decided to try full strength APPLE CIDER VINEGAR. First, I began mixing 1 TBS of ACV in a glass of water and drinking it. I swished well with water afterwards to protect my enamel. (ACV ingested has many health benefits too!) On my days off, and in the evenings, I applied full strength ACV to all the blistered areas. It became scabbed and hard. The next morning, in the shower, I soaked the area until it became very soft, and would gently rub/scrub all the scabs off. I got all of the scabs off if I could...some weren’t ready to come off yet (hard to explain). After I was out and dried, I dabbed the areas again, very lightly, with ACV again. I apply my makeup if I’m going out. If I’m staying home, I apply iACV throughout the day….focusing on the blisters. This was not for the faint of heart, as it burns like h-e-double hockey sticks. But, it was so worth it for me after being tortured by this thing for a long time.
Was this a cure? No. After seeing it respond better with the ACV, but not resolving completely, I decided I needed a stronger anti-fungal.
I then was brave enough to try the TEA TREE OIL. I was nervous about applying this to my face because of all the “reactions” and “sensitivities” that I read about online. But, one day I decided to try it anyway, and I am so thankful I did. While the ACV really showed improvement for me, and it became manageable; the TTO has completely cured this. Yes….cured. It has been at least six months since it resolved, and it has not returned. I applied the TTO several times per day until it was completely gone. It burns upon application, but not as badly at the ACV. And with the ACV, I had to apply as a compress which was time consuming, more painful, and more difficult to manage. To apply the TTO, I simply had to put the oil onto the area a couple times per day, and the oil did all the work. The oil that I used came from a common drugstore shelf, so it wasn’t as strong as some that are out there. The label said 100% pure tea tree oil, and it did the trick. Certainly, I can only share what has worked for me. Again, I did not receive a diagnosis at any point, but I can confirm that it was fungal. Best wishes to you!
I recognize this is a very old question on here but I'm new to this site and hoping to find new answers...
. I have had the exact same problem around my nose. From the red almost scaley rash to the tiny pimple /blisters. I have only figured out what NOT to do, including staying far far away from topical steroids. It always gets worse when the humidity rises so the idea that it's a fungal infection is probably spot on. Unfortunately, rubbing alcohol (or if you're adventurous - nail Polish remover) is the best, it'll make it more red and it stings but a few days of keeping it clean and dry with that stuff seems to kill the infection. Then, no kidding, Neutrogena healthy skin foundation helps cover the redness and restore the nutrients.. I don't normally wear makeup but this rash has got me trying everything. So far that's worked the best for me, but it keeps coming back. Any more information would be greatly appreciated.
I have been dealing with the exact same problem for a couple years now. I am 45 and never had any real acne or anything like that. I've tried lots of things and one dr gave me cream for rosacea but that only helped a little bit. I recently started using Lavender Essential Oil directly on it and so far it is going away and fast. Also helps with the pain associated with this annoying rash or whatever it is. So embarrassing when it starts to flake and you don't even know it. Trust me, try the lavender and a good quality lavender. I hope it helps you the way it is helping me. Good luck!
I get the same thing it is a pain in the a$@ beleive it or not I use bar soap with 10% Sulfur in it when washing my face. Also after I get out of shower I use a 10% Sulfur Ointment just use a little don't go crazy. MAKE SURE BEFORE ANY ONE TRYES THIS THAT YOU ARE NOT ALLERGIC TO SULFUR! Also will help with acne. It don't cure it but controls it very well I been doing this for years. Any qquestions I will help as much as I can I'm not a doctor of any sort just an individual. This works for my skin and body chemistry it may not work for everyone but try it no need to use harsh chemicals on face or pharmaceuticals. Any one trys it post it and share your results. Remember always after you wash your face don't touch your face with your hands if they get dirty. Good luck hope this helps some one
Just wondering if you found anything to helps wth the flare ups? Mine has been very bad lately. I tried an antibiotic, but ended up having a reaction to it. Then I was prescribed a cortisone cream. It worked initially, but has since lost its effectiveness. I can't tell whether this is diet related, or a product I am using. I only get it on one nostril too. Just feeling frustrated.
I had that problem of rash around the nose about 15 yrs ago and like you NoseRash, I tried everything under the sun but just as soon as I thought I beat it, it would come back. Finally a friend told me that a nurse had suggested to donate blood as this would regenerate new blood. So this I tried....and am happy to say this WORKED!!! Along with zinc cream, not the zinc with castor oil that does nothing, but the plain white zinc that is a lot stiffer (just make sure you don't have to go out in public for the next few hours as at first too painful to be able to rub it in).
Donated blood 3 times that year and the problem never came back till now....15 yrs later.
Just went to the blood bank today and already feel the difference.
I came across this blog a few months ago when I was looking for a cure to my rash that had suddenly appeared around my nose - a red, itchy, bumpy and basically ... angry rash. It was driving me mad and made me really conscious. Compared to some of the other bloggers, I had the rash for a relatively short time! - 4 weeks.
A Big ThankYou goes out to 'rednose 422' - as a result of your blog, I stopped using Listerine Crisp Mint Mouthwash - don't know whether it was the mint element or some other ingredient in mouthwash, but when I stopped using it, my rash went away. I was silly not to have made the connection, the rash started a little after I started the mouthwash on the advice of my dental hygienist. I have been hanging off from posting this comment in the event that I tempt fate and it comes back - but it has been 6 weeks now and fingers crossed...I am still rash free.
In the interest of others - I will keep this post up to date should my rash return. My dental hygienist incidentally just added 'Allergic to Listerine' onto my notes.
I have been having these recurring patches at the edge of my nose for a few years now. Red, flaky, tender, tingling, pin like white heads. I've been prescribed zithromax, mucoprocin, as well as anti-biotics. NOTHING seems to help and it's very hard on my self esteem to have this on my face. Just when I think it's going to heal and be gone it starts to flare back up. I am so tired of it! I am going to try the Benadryl as this is the first time I have heard of it. I hope it helps and will post back to let you know.
Can't thank you enough for this info! I too have been suffering from this for months and nothing that was prescribed by the dermatologist worked.
He kept wanting to give me stronger and stronger ointments.
I tried the Benedryl and within hours it started to clear up and by the next morning I was 90% cured! Ecstatic! Thanks so so much!!
Dissolve salt in hot water (equal parts). Dip cotton swap into solution and hold over affected area for a few minutes. Do not rinse off. Repeat nightly. Do not apply lotion or oil to affected area.
I too have struggled continuously for years with this!! I have used everything that the dermatologist and estetician have prescribed along with cortisone cream, tea tree, everything!! It was a few days ago when I sent a photo to my estecian that she said it looked like a stress rash that things started to "click". Well....I have to say I found the answer.. .FINALLY!!!
Benedryl.
We are somehow having an allergic reaction to stress and its coming from inside our bodies so its impossible to treat it topically and expect it to go away.
I woke up yesterday morning with an instinct to run to the store and buy Benedryl...I did..within hours the redness had disipitated and the bumps had become smaller. Today it's ten times better than it has been for 2 months. On my way home from work tonight I stopped at Safeway and picked up the generic brand of Benedryl topical cream along with the generic brand of Benedryl...$6.00 total....I put it on about 2 hours ago and already my skin is smoothing out and becoming normal again!! Yay!!!
i have had this problem a good few years ago and its awful then i found out it was because i was using toothpaste with baking soda it went for years but just recently has come back so im trying to find out if im using anything wth baking soda in it hope this helps

I don't usually post on these, but I have the same problem under my nose and understand how much you want to get rid of it.
I have been using an anti fungal cream called "daktacort" you can pick it up from any pharmacy, it is a steroid cream and reduces redness and the bumps almost immediately but only works for as long as you are using the cream. I stopped when I thought it was gone and it came back within a few days.
My sister also has the same thing and she was taking a supplement called "milk thistle" once a day and said that it cleared for the amount of time she was using it (it is better for you than steroid cream and also cleanses the liver.) I don't know if it works on everyone so I have bought some today hoping it will clear my problem up. I'll post back in a few days f it has. Hope this helps!

Hi ive recently struggled with the same condition 6'yrs and have tried everything from doxycycline to grape seed extract and everything in between. The only thing that has helped is taking some acidophilus and vitamin c. Washing my face with head and shoulders with selenium and the best thing has been using aquafour healing ointment as a moisturizer. I hope this helps someone..
My partner has redness and flaking around the nose. Based on cross-referencing descriptions and photos, we believe it is Seborrheic Dermatitis. More info here:

This is essentially the same thing that causes dandruff of the scalp, except occurring in sebaceous glands on the face (such as around the nose).
I previously was able to eradicate a case of dandruff by stopping use of particular hair products (e.g. gel), and by putting neem oil on my scalp. I intend to try using neem oil in this case to see if it cures this current condition.
Good luck!
Hi all, I have had this for the past 4 months! Here is an image:

Tender and painful red bumpbs around the inside of my nostrils. The more I touch it the more it flares up.
I also got this 7 years ago (after 5 months of being in a new city), and then just again got it a few months ago (10 months after being also in a new city). Both of these times I am living in older apartments with no central air, also have pretty stressful jobs. I also have very fair skin. Last time the only way it improved was when I moved back to the the east coast in with my parents. Doctor said it is seborheic dermatitis and gave me locoid steroid cream. It helped but i have to use it twice a day to keep the rash away! After a few months it has become less effective. I went to a different doctor who just gave me antibiotic pills and mupirocin antibiotic cream. I have been on these for 3 days now and no improvement. This is so stressful.
I am now wondering if it has to do with shampoo, toothpaste, or diet. I do tend to eat sweets everyday. What toothpaste and shampoo are you all switching to, if that helped?
I have been battling this for so long... sigh... just so you know you are not alone here is a pic (looks just like yours). Pin sized red dots around the corners of the nose...

It started 15 years ago when I get a bad cold, and was made worse by some hydrocortisone cream. I FINALLY went to the doctor about it recently, and he gave me Ketoconazole cream and 40mg Orecea, but after a solid month of both, I saw no change in the redness.
After skimming through this thread, it sounds like two things that have worked for others are liquid Erythromycin and Minocycline? Is there anything else I should consider?
I am determined to get this cleared up! 15 years... Ive had enough. But it sounds like I need to make another trip back to the doctor :(
