Itchy Scar

Two years ago, my son fell while playing outside and scraped his cheek pretty good. We cleaned it real well and it healed pretty nicely, we thought. We knew it would leave a small scar that, over time would lessen in appearence. About 6 months ago, it scabbed over. We put neosporin on it and it looked okay after a week. It is now raised, and it looks like it is a dry patch on his cheekbone. He complains that it itches all the time and because he is constantly scratching it, it looks like it is beginning to scab over again. Thoughts?

Thank you! My husband and I were worried that it was more serious. I'll keep on him about not scratching it!

Hi,

It would really help if he try to avoid scratching. The act of scratching itself  is a stimulus. What is happening underneath the scab is that new skin is being made and white blood cells and other kind of cells are being released. This may be the cause of the itching. Scratching can also undo the repair and rip the skin again, which will lead to a longer time healing. This is also the reason for a scar to develop.

Take care and regards.
