Rash around mouth - help!

Hi,
Our 7 month old son started to get a rash on his chin about 4 weeks ago, which shortly after spread upwards to above his top lip as well. The doc said it looked like a "teething rash", as it was red, blotchy with little red bumps but didn't seem to bother him at all. He does spit up a lot and has been very drooly lately, but no teeth yet. The past week or so, the patchiness is going up onto the cheeks and even his nose. It is very red/angry looking when wet, and when dry it feels almost scaly. I have tried keeping it dry, as well as applying Vaseline, Vitamin E oil and hydrocortisone cream, none of which has made much of a difference.

Well, we saw our family doc this morning, and she thinks it's an atopic eczema from drooling, since the little man has super-sensitive skin to start with. She prescribed 1% hydrocortisone cream bid and recommended Aveeno Baby soap for washing his face. We are to f/u in 2 weeks. Thanks again for your help.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,

Without examination,it is very difficult to confirm a diagnosis but it can be contact dermatitis(allergic or irritant),eczema(atopic dermatitis) or perioral dermatitis.

Allergic contact dermatitis is an inflammation of the skin caused by an allergy to a substance. In irritant contact dermatitis there is skin irritation, including inflammation, swelling of the area, and warmth. The rash will be confined to the specific area that came into contact with the offending agent.Eczema is a common disorder in infants and is associated with dry and itchy patches of skin.

I sincerely advise you to consult a dermatologist/pediatric dermatologist and discuss these possibilities with him.Pls don,t apply anything without consulting as it may aggravate the condition.

Hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep us posted if you have any additional queries.
