Hello,
Topical steroids change the way the immune system functions, and hence they can inhibit the skin’s ability to fight off bacterial or fungal infections. Steroids can also cause tinea incognito which is a fungal infection (mycosis) of the skin caused by the presence of steroids. The resulting rash is a bizarre pattern of widespread inflammation with pustules.
It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
Hi Dr,
I understand that accurate diagnosis is required before starting the cream treatment as if wrong cream is used for fungal infection for instance using steroids may not help in healing and may also aggravate the condition which is highly potent steroid. Why is steroid can worsen the condition? Thanks in advance.
Hi Dr,
Why is the steroids will worsen?
Hi Dr,
You mentioned that steroids may worsen the fungal infection is due to the "suppress" action? Please elaborate. Thanks in advance.
Hello,
If it is a fungal infection, then preferably the treatment is antifungals and using steroids may not help in healing and may also aggravate the condition if it is highly potent steroid. So that is why it is important to confirm the diagnosis before starting the treatment.
I hope it helps. Take care and regards.
Hi Dr,
If the diagnosis is identified wrongly, for instance skin reaction is treated by using Daktarin (antifungal). Will it worsen and aggravate the affected area?
Hello,
Daktarin is a topical antifungal, Daktacort contains a topical antifungal and a topical steroid, Dermovate and Elomet is a topical steroid and Fucidin is an antibacterial cream. You have to confirm the diagnosis first from a dermatologist and then use these because some of these especially topical steroids area not without side effects and hence should be taken after prescription only.
I hope it helps. Take care and please do keep us posted on how you are doing. Kind regards.
