Red Bumps

I had a girlfriend who was on the pill and we regularly had unprotected sex. She claimed she had no STIs. About two weeks after we broke up and were no longer having sex these bumps appeared on my penis.

They are small red bumps on my penis shaft, two directly under the head,  and there are also a couple directly above my penis on the lower abdomen. They itch at times and are hard underneath the redness. At times the skin underneath has even produced what appears to be a cyst but then that goes away.

I went to my school's health center and they thought it was herpes. The culture came back negative. The NP told me it was dermatitis.

It has now been about ten weeks since it first appeared. The bumps seemed to heal and change their size throughout this period.  I also have a tiny red spot on the head and I have what feels like a bump where the scrotum meets the penis inside the skin of the scrotum. Any idea what it might be and how I can treat it?

Yes, the itching improved with the cream, but the bumps on the penis have not totally cleared. Some have healed but others have appeared. They occasionally itch and as mentioned before when itched they bulb up underneath to form what looks like a cyst.

Hi,

Yes, scabies is a likely differential here. I suggest that a microscopic evaluation of the skin scrapings be done from the involved area . Scabetic  infections may show the mites in the microscopic exam. Follow your physician's advice of not putting the cream on the penis as this will only irritate the penile skin.

Follow up with your physician and avoid sexual or intimate contact at this point. Scabies is transmitted through direct skin to skin contact. Wash your linens, towels and beddings very well. Although ,studies have not conclusively shown that scabies may be transmitted through clothings or beddings  still it is best to practice precaution. Continue with the medications.
Is your skin condition improving with the medications?

Hi,

You have noted that the bumps seemed to heal and change their size throughout the period. Aside from these, were there any other associated symptoms like a penile discharge or discharge from the bumps?

Are there any associated changes in urinary patterns or in the character of the urine?

Are the bumps itchy and do they scale?

A dermatitis and a fungal infection may be differentials here. A microscopic evaluation of skin scrapings in the area may be done to ascertain the presence of a fungal infection.
Have you tried applying any medications in the area?

The definite cause for the condition has to be determined first prior to applying certain medications. A topical corticosteroid may help alleviate the redness and other symptoms. However, this should only be applied sparingly and corticosteroids have their own side effects .So always discuss this with your physician. Dermatitis  has no definite treatment if this is your case.
