Recurring Balanitis

i was diagnosed with balanitis approx. 3 weeks ago. The Dr. prescribed Lamasil AT and told me if I did not see any changes to come back in about 4 weeks. Since this time the redness can be very strong or seemingly disappear. This morning it seemd almost completely gone but by lunch time i was red and scaly. I am concerned about this because there appears to be a new area that is infected which is right next to the original site, and is showing the same symptoms. This is pretty stressing because it has affected my relationship w/ my beautiful girlfriend and we cannot express our love as often as we would like. I am going to make an educated guess here, but the fact that I am intimate with her is probably what is causing the balanitis to go unaffected by the medication. Furthermore, I am active physically which I think may be aiding the situation. Is there a possibility that this may be something other than balanitis, such as psoriasis or eczema? If I am right in my assessment, what is the most likely course of action, will I be re-prescribed the same medication and told to stay away from my girlfriend, or will a stronger cream and antibiotic be prescribed? What are the odds I will have to have a carbon-laser or other type of procedure done? Thank you for your help in advance.

Hi

Allergies to condoms may also cause dermatitis and the redness or rash if secondary to an allergy should affect the areas covered by the condom. Yes, this is a differential also. It would be wise to avoid any sexual activity until this has been thoroughly assessed. If this is dermatitis, sexual activity may only aggravate the condition.

Thank you Dr. What are the odds that the new areas of infection are from some sort of allergic reaction to latex condoms or possibly a new site of infection based on friction, etc? Should I completely cease all sexual activity with my girlfriend until I know for sure? I have an appointment tomorrow morning so I will be sure to post my results

Hi

Balanitis is a skin condition which encompasses fungal infections, dermatitic and psoriatic conditions involving the head of the penis. If the skin condition persists despite the antifungal medication then this may not be fungal or there may be an underlying dermatitic skin problem. Ask your doctor f you may use a medication containing both steroids and antifungal preparation. If dermatitis is involved, the corticosteroid may help control it. Also, microscopic evaluation of the scales may help ascertain the presence of a fungal infection.
