Blood Lab Diabetic Results

Hi,

I am an African American 24 year old female that has had blood labs drawn to see what my blood sugar ranges are. I fasted and had them done on 5/9/15. My parents both 61 years old are pre-diabetic and diabetes runs in my family. I got the results yesterday and I wanted to post them here to get advice on if I am pre-diabetic or not. I am kind of freaking out because I Googled the ranges and I am getting all different types of answers!!! Below are the results. Any comments would be great! Thanks

Bl-glyco hb - A1c - 5.4
Est. avg glucose - 108 mg/dl
Glucose, plasma - 99mg/dl

Hi Luna, you are welcome.

Like I said, they won't diagnose you with anything with a hba1c of 5.4.  however, this is an early warning and time to take those lifestyle measures.  Hopefully with these you will stay stable long term and not go on to develop diabetes.

Anyway, the healthy lifestyle should improve your well being and quality of life, regardless of diabetes.

You are welcome back any time.

Hey, thank you for your post! I went to the doctor today and they let me know I'm not pre-diabetic. I am and will be changing my eating habits. I really would like to get into the swing of eliminating sugar as well as salt because I have hypertension as well. Thanks for your comment! I am new to this site and you were the first to respond to me :)

Hello,

Your results are very slightly high, however they would not get you diagnosed with diabetes or even prediabetes by most in the medical profession.

I do think it would be best that you consider yourself at risk of diabetes, and take the appropriate lifestyle steps to be as healthy as possible and hopefully things will stay stable long-term.

What to do:-
1. if you are overweight, work hard at getting to 'ideal' weight
2. Daily exercise at least 30 minutes on all or most days
3. Avoid sugars and sweets, particularly softdrinks and sweets.
4. Avoid high fructose corn syrup.  This means reading labels as HFCS is in many many processed foods.
5. Eat a lower carb diet (cut down on grains etc), with most carbs coming from non-starchy veges, nuts, cheeses, unsweetened regular fat dairy, etc.
6. Do get your Hba1c monitored every 6 months or so, so you can see how you are doing.

If at the next monitoring your numbers are still the same or higher, then I would recommend you get a blood sugar meter and do some testing at home to see what foods work for your and don't raise your blood sugar.

Hope this helps.
