He is going to have test his Sugar after drinking.....or someone test it for him and see how his sugar is reacting, Then base his drinking off of that.

Is he drinking the alcohol straight or mixing them? mixed drinks tend to have a lot of sugar in them. also what kind of medicine does he take for his diabetes? His Dr. would be better able to inform him because they would know what he takes and how drinking affects him with the medicine he takes. I am a type 1 and I do drink on occasion I do have to be careful of watching for low blood sugars and I have to take the sugar intake into consideration as well as carbs. But I went over that stuff with my Dr. he should really ask his Dr.
as to the smoking any time a person quits its a good for them regardless of them being a diabetic or not. I am not to clear on your questions of  "How can we cure or prevent and implications? "  did you mean about the smoking or just his diabetes ?  I agree with the post above about eating right and getting exercise, and just staying informed about his condition and being very proactive with his treatment.
God Bless

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi.  I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes.  Not smoking will help as a type 2 him stay healthy.  Smoking gives the body more stress overall and prevents the insulin from being absorbed properly.  The best way to prevent complications from type 2 diabetes is to continue to not smoke, eat a well balanced diet, and get plenty of exercise.

Drinking is worse for a type 1 diabetic than a type 2, because it causes lows in a type 1. For type 2 I am not as familiar, since my child is type 1, but I don't believe it would cause the same kinds of low blood sugars.  It would still add lots of carbs he doesn't need to his system, which would just mean that he would need to exercise even more to deal with them.  As as usual, monitoring blood sugars through frequent testing is also required.
