Can people lose weight by dieting with little to no exercise?

Well, my doctor said i should lower my colestserol, and prescribed me with an aspirin and simvastatin tablet daily. To help lowering the cholesterol, i changed my diet. I eat cereal for breakfast, a light lunch, and sometimes a fruit for dinner. after 4-5 weeks i have been able to about 16-18lbs. I used to weight around 180-182, and now I am at 166lbs. The thing is, i havent done that much exercise. I play soccer 2 times a week, and since I live in 2 floor building I have to go up/down the stairs, but thats it. So my question is, can food diet in itself be enough for losing weight? I am concerned because even tho I am happy with getting back to my normal weight, I dont want to think is one of the medications that the doctor prescribed.

Cheers

I was once told that losing weight is 90% what you eat and 10% exercise. If you decrease your calories you can lose without working out. Just be sure not to lower your calories too much ad the body will go into starvation mode and hold on to everything. That being said, exercise is still important to keep your muscles healthy.

Yes, it can be done; however, some form of exercise is best, as you need to keep your muscles strong.  Muscles burn  more fat, so the more you have, the faster the fat will come off. Stair climbing is good, provided that you do enough of it. The soccer 2 times/week is also good.

I've lost weight before just by diet and all I did was walk at home and around work.
