Heat Warning!

The US is baking in record heat from the Northeast through the Southeast and westward into Texas.  We're roasting with dangerous heat and humidty levels.  I just saw a story on the news about a Georgia police dog who died of heat stroke after chasing a suspect.  Let that death serve a purpose and keep your dogs cool and hydrated.  Heat stroke can strike very quickly and with no real warning unless you know what to look for.  If the National Weather Service issues a heat advisory, heat watch or heat warning, treat your pets the same way you would treat yourself and stay inside with the air conditioner.  Limit outdoor time and keep activity to a minimum, particularly in the afternoon hours.  Be cool!

Its been 100 all this wk not our worst but it sure as heck is hot!! I dont take my dog out except to pee and do his business then i tell him c'mon bk inside!! I dont have a big house but it has a good floor plan so my pup just runs from one side to the other and thats how he gets his energy out LOL! and i do NOT take him in the car unless its a quick trip we do together and im not getting out! Our corner stores out here where i live has drivethrus so I always just pull up and ask for what i need they are always friendly and help and they even give my pup a treat!!
I think keep a lil fan around is a good idea! I have a small one i use that i sit on the floor to blow on me here in my room my pup knows its hot and when hes had enough he lays on the floor right in front of it! so if its super hot might be a good idea to have one on the floor for your dog mine loves the air blowing on him!

Good advice on riding in the back of trucks and the hot pavement.

I hope you have air conditioning.....Try and stay cool        sara

Speaking of cars, that reminds of trucks and people who let their dogs ride unrestrained in the bed of a pickup.  It may look "cool" but it's not at all safe.  I'm sure most of us have seen dogs splattered on major freeways and wondered how they got there in the first place.  Now you know.  They either jumped out of a pickup or got thrown out.

Dogs can burn their foot pads on the hot surface of a pickup bed and hot pavement just like humans.  Keep on the grass during walks and if you can't give them a ride inside the vehicle, at least transport them in a safe crate in the bed of the pickup.

We're looking at 110-115 heat indices here through the weekend.  AAAUUGGGHH!!!!

Oh yes...dogs and cars! Like Sara says, even the windows open a crack won't help ONE BIT....nor will a bowl of water left in the car, or a fan running, or anything else when the temperature inside soars up to the same as an oven! Don't even THINK about leaving a dog/pet/or child in a car in this kind of summer heat. Not even for 5 minutes.

Beware of 'shady places to park' as well. Shade moves as the sun moves. What was shade at 11am might be full sun at 11.30!

Keep cool!

Also please dont leave your pet in the car even if the windows are cracked as the heat inside the car or truck is much higher.  Many pets have passed on due to this......I know pets love to go for rides but this isnt safe during these times.  The police logs are listed in our paper and they are called alot about this.         sara
