Agree with Karla but, since you are making such a long trip, I would consider possibly trying to find a Vet along the way to check the dog out.
Have a safe trip and nice of you to take your Mom's dog home.
Duh!!! I see that this is a young lady, not a guy.....Sorry!
Just thought of something else....All the water drinking may be car sickness or motion sickness....If he seems uncomfortable with the trip alone, this will add to his mounting stress....
If you think this is related, you could buy some OTC Dramamine at any store, also....This will settle his stomach and/or nausea and calm his nerves down....The dose is: 2-4mg. per lb. every 8 hours....This could be very useful & I'd try it! Karla
Hello & welcome....First, I'm terribly sorry about your mother.....May she RIP....
Do you know if this dog was sick before your mother's passing? Has he had his vaccines any time lately? do you know?
Either way, here's what to do:
The most important thing here is hydration...Drinking water is good! I would not force any food on this dog as whatever he has been eating or not eating (At the not so nice place), may be the problem!
Please remember that this guy's world has been turned upside down....He does not know what is happening to him and everyone in his life now, are strangers....It's possible that his illness has been brought on by nothing but stress!
I would stop at a store and buy some children's pedialyte & a plastic bowl....Get a cup of ice (Somewhere) to cool it off....Offer him this as a drink to keep his electrolytes up....
If you are going to be traveling for days, you WILL have to offer some food.....However, he can live on the pedialyte for 3-4 days till you can get him to a Vet.....
Be careful on your travels & please come back and let us know how it's going....Also, come back with any more questions if needed......Take care & good luck....I'll be thinking about you both..... Karla
