Need help for my newly adopted dog

I just adopted a 3 to 4 yr old pomeranian from a shelter that the city had picked up as a stray. He was in a kill shelter for 4 days and then taken out by a rescue shelter. I adopted him at a Petsmart. He had kennel cough so has been on meds for that, doxicycline and hydrocodone syrup (as needed) but seems to be much better. Took him in for his first dental cleaning...do not think his teeth have ever been cleaned...and my vet called and said his ALT was over 1000 and she would not do dental. They did X-ray which was normal and did a bile acids test and complete panel of bloodwork which I will get results on Monday. I have 2 other poms that are on Hills Science Diet ID for gastro restoration and he is on that also but I have no idea what he was fed before or what happened in that kill shelter for 4 days. Does anyone have any ideas what dogs are fed in those places or have had a dog with ALT this high. He is very healthy except cannot put on weight. He eats great and bowels are normal and drinks water. Would greatly appreciate any suggestions. Thank you!

Thank you Karla...I wanted to send it to you too but not sure how to get two names in box.
Thank you so much for all the help and advice you gave me. I appreciate you more than you will know.
Yes, I did get my Christmas miracle. To hear that news made my day just perfect and to see Dakota as happy and his personality has just blossomed and to feel so loved and the love and smiles he gives us is truly a gift from God. What a great dog! And he has gained almost a pound too!!! My vet was soooo happy about that. Not to say there may not be a rough patch ahead but we go one day at a time here and we are happy for today.
Thanks again Karla!!!

Hi there....I have printed off all these good recipes.
Thank you so much for taking the time.
I hope Yoda is doing better and better.
Dakota's stools are already looking better...formed but loose so my vet was correct in lowering the dose of Enulose.
Thanks again so much, Karla. You are so very kind.

Peanut Butter Bones

2 C. whole-wheat flour
1 T. baking powder
1 C. Natural/Organic Peanut Butter
1 C. Skim Milk

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
In a bowl, combine flour & baking powder. In another bowl, mix peanut butter and milk.
Add wet mixture to dry, mix well.
Turn out dough on a lightly floured surface & knead. Roll out to 1/4 inch thick and cut out shapes. I use a 3 inch bone cookie cutter, but you could cut these in strips of about 3" x 1".
Place on a greased baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes or until lightly brown. I bake 10 minutes, then turn them over and bake 10 more...Seems to make them crispier! Cool on rack & store in an air tight container......I freeze these and pull out a few at a time......Happy baking......Karla

Susan, Here's the first one:

How to Make Healthy Treats at Home

Homemade Treat Recipe
Yield: approx. two dozen treats

USING CANNED FOOD:

1.Open the can and shake the loaf of food out of the can.
2.Cut the loaf into 1/4" thick slices, and then cut the slices into bite-sized pieces.
3.Bake the treats in a microwave oven on high for approximately 2½ to 3 minutes.
4.Store baked treats in the refrigerator and discard leftovers after 5-7 days.
5.Homemade treats should not exceed 10% of your pet's total daily intake because heat alters the nutritional characteristics of the food.
6.Do not freeze homemade treats.
For a conventional oven, follow the instructions above and place the bite-sized pieces on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for approximately 30 minutes or until crispy.

Using Dry Food:

1.In a blender, add 2 cups of dry food and grind into a powder.
2.Pour powder into a mixing bowl and gradually add about 1 to 1¼ cups of water, stirring until it forms a dough consistency.
3.Shape into individual "treats" or "cookies" and flatten the dough using the back of a spoon (the cookies will not flatten like standard "people cookies" do.)
4.Place treats on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake in the oven at 350 degrees for approximately 30 minutes or until crispy.
5.Store baked treats in the refrigerator and discard leftovers after 5-7 days.
6.Homemade treats should not exceed 10% of your pet's total daily intake because heat alters the nutritional characteristics of the food.
7.Do not freeze homemade treats.
To enhance flavor, sprinkle oregano powder over the dry food treats. However, do not add oregano to homemade treats when Prescription Diet® z/d® or d/d® foods are used. Cookie cutters make treats fun to make and serve. Only Prescription Diet® a/d® Canine/Feline food, Prescription Diet® n/d® Canine and Prescription Diet® s/d® Canine foods cannot be made into homemade treats using the above recipe. However, you can use the following recipe for homemade treats for these foods:

Roll the canned food into little balls and place in the freezer to serve later as a frozen treat. Since it is not possible to bake n/d® Canine into treats, this is a great alternative. Also, this is refreshing to pets during the hot summer.

Hi Karla....you are so nice and kind to look at the store for me. I appreciate and took down all your info. I did not get to Petsmart today because we had a huge robbery at the home across the street from us and I was a witness to the driver. They came over tonight and showed me pics he had on his camera and when I saw her pic I got chills up and down my arms because I just knew it was the woman I saw. It was a pic taken two years ago but she used to work for this gentleman and they suspected her and when I drew a sketch of her face he went for his camera and pow! It is getting closer to holidays so people are stretched for money and they do stupid things. The Irving Police will catch them and they will be gone away for a long time....this was a huge robbery of gold and diamonds and fine jewelry and they knew just where to look.
Back to the pups....I am soooo thrilled that Yoda is doing better. I just know you will make her healthy and well again and thrive. That makes my heart smile to hear that good news.
I emailed my vet back this morning to tell her that Dakota had developed very very loose stools, no formation but not watery. She said to cut back on the Enulose for now and see if that will help. I know changing diet, plus adding 2 antibiotics and the Enulose will change his stools for a while but I am thankful she thinks the Enulose was the main cause. She is just so awesome. He and my miniature pom have become best buds. They have play sessions 3 to 4 times a day. It is hilarious because Cayce will try and ride Dakota's back but she can only get her front legs across him.
I will get out tomorrow and get him some treats. I am not sure why the Mother Hubbard veggie treats say 12% because they have no primary protein in the ingredients. I will run by the vets office to see what they have and then know exactly what to look for.
Thank you again for taking your time to look for my pups. That was so sweet. I will look for those. I love doing research and learning for my pets to help them stay as healthy as possible.
Have a great day, Karla!

Morning Susan...I have not forgot your recipes, I promise...My "Yoda" is doing better today, thank you for asking......I'm on a roll! ;)

I just want to catch you before you go out shopping......I went to the City last night, (My  Son lives there) & went into a Petco to get my "Baby Yoda" some things...While I was there, I started looking for treats for you.....

What I found: I didn't look at any of the chewy or meaty treats...Only hard cookie types...The Mother Hubbard treats were yes, basically 12% protein....I don't understand this, either!  Then I found "Wellness Yogurt & Honey" bars...The ingredient list looked great & this is a very good company...They read 8% Protein....

Then I found these Homemade looking cookies....The Name: "Gourmet (Something)"...Sorry, I can't remember the name...Anyway, I have fed these many times...They are ONLY at Petco....They're in Clear, Plastic, Tub, containers & look like bakery made cookies, with dustings, sprinkles, & icing on various varieties.....They are beautiful to look and appear homemade....I have fed 3 different flavors & my dogs love them......There are probably 10 different kinds & 3 of them read 5% protein.  ;)  It's possible that your other two could have these, also.....I did not check the Fat content though.....

I did not find anything else with any lower percent......So, when you go, check those out......I'll get back with you later...Just want to give you a heads up about these cookies.....They also had a good expiration date!   Karla

I got an email from my vet this morning about the no protein treats. She said they just cannot be beef, chicken or primary protein treats. She said they carry a selection of vegetable and fruit based ones he could eat but also the pet stores carry ones also. So I know the Mother Hubbard veggie treats will work fine. I will have to go and spend some time there today to see what else he can have.
Yea!!
How is your sick new one doing? Better I sure hope.

Hi Karla....first I must say that I am sorry that you have a sick baby right now. I just know you will nurse her back to good health and she will have a good long life.
Thank you so much for your responses!!!! Where do you get all your knowledge....I am sooo impressed.
Dakota is eating the small fresh apple pieces I give him and seems very happy with them being replaced for now. (My pom that has the pancreas problem....I gave her a couple of apple pieces and she vomited them up in the middle of the night so I guess her tummy can't tolerate apples.)
I looked on Mother Hubbard's website and all the treats I see contain 12% protein. I have always bought the veggie or peanut butter ones in the past but they show 12% protein. Is there something I am missing there?
Yes, I would love your recipe for the peanut butter bones!
Yes, I would love your recipe for baking the canned food Dakota has to eat now. That sounds awesome!
I do know about the China issue. Every time I go into Petsmart or any pet store and see those chicken jerky things on the shelf I just want to scream. I will NOT buy anything that has anything to do with China.
I do not buy anything from a grocery store or discount store. Just poop bags....haha
I was actually relieved when my vet told me what Dakota has because I had done some research online over the weekend and found the liver shunt thing. I have a friend who has a chihuahua who they thought had one but doesn't...poor thing has something much more severe...way too much protein caused all kinds of neuro issues with him. So sad. I had my Dakota already on his death bed after hearing the liver counts but when my vet called and reassured me of what a liver shunt is and how it is treatable and how healthy Dakota is now she made me feel so much better. I live in Irving, TX and I researched vets and she is the best vet. She knows my babies and can tell me instantly what is going on and she has always been 100% right on. I know....just like you know with your new little foster dog....that I can make Dakota have a long, healthy life. With my vets help.
Dakota was picked up as a stray from Dallas Animal Control and was in their kill shelter for 4 days and no one claimed him so he was ok for adoption. Lost Paws Rescue took 9 dogs (him included) out and I saw him the first day he was up for adoption from them and I adopted him. He is the most loving, gentle, smart and beautiful little boy. He is fully trained. He has never had a dental cleaning so I am waiting to hear back from my vet to see if we can do that after he gets off the antibiotics. I wish I could send you a pic of him.
Anyway...sorry to go on....but I just love hearing your knowledge and talking with you. I am very passionate about my babies just as you.

Hi Susan..I'm terribly sorry about your Dakota's diagnoses...I suspected that to be the cause, I'm sorry to say.....

I have quite a few ideas for you, but don't have enough time right now.....I have a very sick little foster dog that was basically sent here to die.....Contrary to everyone else (Including her Doctors), I have NO intention of letting that happen....With that said, she requires my attention quite often & is in quarantine is not happy...She cannot be around my own 4, so that's a problem, too!

For now, your guy can have fresh or dried apple slices, baby carrots, frozen yogurt (Unflavored)(Not Ice cream).....Off the top of my head: "Old Mother Hubbard" makes some great cookies....Around 10 flavors, but 2 of them have NO protein...Those would be the Peanut butter or Veggie ones.....They Do have Egg in them & eggs are considered protein. I say this brand because their easy to find......Petco & Petsmart both sell this brand......Your dogs need the "Mini" size......If you have no axcess to these stores (As Me), then you can order online & I can give you a resource that's trusted...

Next, I have a fabulous Homemade recipe for peanut butter bones.....I'll be glad to share....I make a large batch, pack in freezer bags & take a few out at a time...

I also have a recipe that you can use your canned, prescription food: Cut in slices & bake on a cookie sheet till they hardened like cookies.....You can add toppings like, Garlic Powder, Parmesan Cheese, Cinnamon, Parsley, Etc. if your interested...

There are many companies that make dried Sweet Potato Treats.....However, ANY made in CHINA CANNOT be eaten!!! Very dangerous right now! Some companies make good USA ones , but hard to find; they are out there....Sweet Potato Treats would be a wonderful Chew/treat, but again be cautious where they are made.....There are recipes online that tell you how to make your own...That would be the safer bet!

Next: DO NOT buy any treats from a discount center or grocery store.....Even if you recognize the Brand name & think it's a good brand, DO NOT fall into that trap.....These treats are full of Dangerous Chemicals that could be fatal to your dogs!

OK, let me know what you need: I must run take care of all the creatures including "Baby Yoda"...I've got Chicken, Rice & Spinach cooking for all of them...  ;)   Yes, they all will get vital supplements, also......Bye for now, Karla

Hi Karla....my vet called me today with the results. His bile acids test was high and confirmed that Dakota has a liver shunt. All other bloodwork except liver counts were normal. She put him on Hills KD diet for renal health because it is the lowest in proteins at 3.25%. She said he can have no treats that have protein so I am on the hunt for a treat with no protein or a recipe I can make. He is on two antibiotics to kill bad bacteria that may be in his blood now and she has him on Enulose to help his liver. Do you know something I can give him with no protein?
Thank you.....Susan

Thank you for your  comment. I guess just like us humans there are certain foods that certain dogs cannot tolerate. Dakota's stomach just could not handle Royal Canine but he is thriving on Science Diet ID. I am glad your daughters dog is doing great on Royal Canine. Yeah, my other two poms can only eat the Hills prescription ID and I figure that Dakota will be on some prescription once they find out what is wrong with his liver.

Thanks again for your comment, I appreciate any and all help. Yes, Karla is very knowledgeable and I love hearing from her.

I only know my daughter's experience with her little Chi mix o has chronic pancreas problems. She doesn't live here but knows my Vet who told her to switch from the Science Diet to the Royal Canin low fat intestinal diet.  The first week or so, she was. Bi lethargic but has been doing well now.  This dog has to be almost strictly on this diet.  I personally have no experience with this and Karla would be more knowledgable on the subject.

Thanks again Karla. You are right about the canned food. The moisture in it is so valuable. I feed about 90% canned Hills ID and 10% dry ID. I honestly feel the Hills ID has kept the pancreas at ease in my 10 yr old pom. She used to get it about 3 times a year and since the Hills ID came out and the vet put her on it she has not had one flare up. I am so thankful for that.
My new little guy....we were on vacation and I had to take him to a vet in Colorado and Royal Canine prescription food was what they carried and I thought I was going to run low on canned so I bought 5 cans of it. He vomited it up every meal about 5 hours later. He only got one can and I switched him to the Hills ID and he has not vomited since then. There must be something in Royal Canine that his system rejected. He has begun eating like he should and thriving and his beautiful little personality is coming out. We just have this liver issue to get through. I know I was meant to adopt this little guy to get him well.
Thanks again Karla and I will post what the vet tells me tomorrow....Susan

Hi Dakota.....Unfortunately Science Diet & Royal Canine (The better of the two) have cornered the market on Prescription diets......The good news is that they do work! With the seriousness of both your other dogs issues, You cannot risk a change of food....I have two thoughts however:

1- If you ever get an opportunity to hire a Canine Nutritionist, Do So!  These people can be found pretty easily in towns & online....They are expensive, but will formulate a fresh food diet for any disease for any pet.....
2- Incorporate CANNED ID food in their diet.....Not only is it more nutritional (Because it's not cooked to death like Kibble), it's vital moisture that a dog needs....Most kibble fed dogs spend their life in a state of dehydration; Organs cannot survive without moisture & dogs do not drink enough on their own.....

Your New guy:  The Liver is the only organ in the body that can replenish itself......Of course great nutrition will help.......There are many resources on Liver disease.....I would start with keeping ALL toxins out of his system...That would include any chemicals in low quality pet foods or treats, do not use any flea products or chemical shampoos, (If he has Fleas, bathe him in Dawn Dish Liquid (The Blue one) & that's all!!!)  Do not use any floor chemicals to clean your floors (He will absorb them through his feet). No pesticides on your lawn, you get the idea.....
Any toxins that go in his system have to be filtered by the Liver.....

Again, ask your Vet for a Liver supplement & only feed all 3 of your dogs a good bottled water.....City tap water is FULL of chemicals!!!!!

Good luck tomorrow & Thank You for Adopting! I wish everyone would!!! Let me know what you find out...I'll be thinking about you both....Karla

Thank you so much for your reply. You have told me some things I did not know and I appreciate that. I should find out tomorrow the results of the complete panel and the bile acids test she ran on him. My other two poms can have no fat because of the pancreas and the other had gall stone surgery a couple years ago. My vet says no beef of any kind for my dogs though. With all your knowledge of dogs food what is the one you recommend for dogs with gastro issues. The Hills ID Prescription is the first one that has kept the pancreas levels decent for the last year.
He is a very healthy dog and I just want to believe it is something that is an easy fix but I will find out tomorrow.
Thank you so very much for the time you took and the information you gave me. I talk to my vet about everything!

Welcome Dakota.......Dogs are fed various foods in Shelters & Rescues...Unfortuately, it is usually based on what they can afford.....Because they also take donations of food of any kind, it's impossible to say what they eat.......They feed what ever they have access to.....
Our Rescue has very limited funding so we have to buy brands from Wal-Mart...Our Wal-Mart also gives us food that has been opened or damaged.....This can include any brand that Wal- Mart sells.....ALL are low quality, but better than nothing of course........The Foster Dogs that come through my house are NOT allowed any of it, ever!

Some Nice Humane Societies have a sponsorship through Hills.....They provide the food for their rescues & usually send home a small bag with newly adopted animals.....This is all about promotion of their product hoping that new pet owners will continue to feed it.....Again unfortunately, Science Diet is also an extremely low quality food no better than the cheap Wal-Mart brand, so we're back to square one!

In your dogs case: An ALT of 1000 was NOT caused by any food in 4 days...That's not possible.....4 years of bad food, maybe, but I doubt it....

Since you say he cannot gain weight & with such a High ALT, I would make sure you rule out ALL Parasites first.......Then I would look into a possible Liver Shunt......These can be surgically corrected....More than likely, it's why he was dumped at the shelter to begin with....

Also, your Vet needs to prescribe your dog a Liver supplement...All Vets sell one...The most common are SAMe, Denosyl, & Sentinel.....These are pills you give once a day to help heal the Liver...These are also very important & your Vet should have already started your guy on one....Retest is normally after 30 days of treatment.......Hope some of this helps you...Let me know, Karla

P.S. The Expensive ID diet your Vet is selling you is nothing but ground corn & rice...Both are cheap fillers and cost nothing....There is No nutritional benefit from corn & very little from Rice....There is NO protein included except egg product...Absolutely NO meat.....Dogs have to have meat to survive!  The only reason it's considered for use in Intestinal problems is it has extra fiber in it.....Sadly the fiber that Hills chooses to use is a cheap source called "Powdered Cellulose"....PC is Sawdust!!!!! I kid you not! This food isn't worth $5 and is not considered Healthy...It's actually closer to Chicken feed than dog food, but your Vet makes ALOT of money off of it!!!! Your dogs will not be well long on this product....You yourself can add a good source of extra fiber to ANY good food.....Thought you should know.......Karla
