Neurotic dog

We have a five year old cairn terrier/cocker spaniel dog who cannot be alone. It was apparent when we first got him as a puppy, but has progressed to intolerable. If he is alone in the house or outside he howls and cries continually. Any suggestions? He is driving the neighbours crazy especially since it's summer and the windows are open.

Thanks for your comment margypops. My husband and I have opposite work days so he is hardly ever alone unless we go out to the store or something like that. Even then there's usually a kid or two in the house. Since it is summer we've been going away a little more often leaving him at home with our daughter. When she leaves for work, or just to drive to a store and back he cries and yelps like crazy.  Are there anti-stress pills for dogs? If so, has anyone in this forum tried them? Any advice would be welcome.

How long is he alone for, sometimes people work long hours then when they come in they are tired and then its bed time, perhaps make sure the Pup has some good play time as a child would need. Take him out before work aswell, this is common and sometimes dogs chew up for the same reason, they are frustrated. If he doesnt get much exercise all that he does is sit and sleep, we wouldnt like it either . Good luck I am sure there are some good books out there about this .
